This page picks up where the dialogue on page 184 (Transcendence) left off. As you might recall (and have been likely cursing my name since), Rudy’s dialogue was cut off mid-sentence so I could show Maria and Gavin’s conversation. The pause was intentional, to increase suspense and questions until the very end of the chapter.
But in theory, it will clarify why things happened the way they did.
Rudy’s a lot smoother than he originally seemed…
Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.
I've been reading this for awhile and I don't usually post comments but if this is the direction this comic is going I'm definitely gonna have to take a break from it
This page! SO MANY FEELINGS! <3 I think they're really sweet and that Rudy's absolutely adorable and genuine here. I know his sister is upset but they seem like they'll make a super cute couple.
The dialog here is just so smoothe and perfect, I love it!
;__; That's so sweet! But.. poor Maria, oh my god!
I am trying very hard to like the character of Rain right now, but she is being both stupid and selfish. She's been handed a huge lucky streak in life, and she is apparently throwing it away, completely blatantly ignoring and disregarding the thoughts of her two close friends because a gay man *CLAIMS* to not see her as male, despite having repeatedly shown the absolute opposite.
I do not approve of her choices, but I suppose teenagers are stupid sometimes.
I ship MariaxRain, so this turn of events is making me quite sad, especially on Maria's behalf, but at the same time, I am so incredibly keen to see exactly where this leads us. I'm eagerly looking forward to each and every update! :D
As a transgirl myself, I can't help but feel conflicted with this story arc. While I certainly understand the desire for acceptance, Rain's goals and Rudy's orientation are incompatible.
Worse still, Rudy's unreliable. He's known to be bad at keeping secrets, and his earlier stunt already placed Rain at risk. He might not have intended it, but the consequences won't be any less because of pure intentions.
I suppose what bothers me most is the idea that they can just ignore the problem of orientation. If "going straight" were really that easy, we'd have a lot fewer teens struggling through these issues.
I'll keep reading, but I can't help but hope the story leads away from this. The "moral lesson" from this arc seems contrary to what's been building so far, and it's rather disappointing. :(
This. That's what I wanted to say after this page. I really can't imagine Rain and Rudy ending up happy with this. And it suspiciously feels like the kind of cop-out you'd get in mainstream fiction.
Oh Rudy, oh Rain... *facepalm*
I'm a trans woman myself and I'd be uncomfortable with it if it was being portrayed as Rudy's orientation being changed or Rain's gender not being real enough somehow to be a problem for Rudy, but I'm pretty sure Lynn is going for a lot more nuance than that?
If there is one group who aren't known for their clarity on sexuality or for making Good Life Choices on anything around sex, it's probably teenagers (e.g., all of my teenage years). Rudy & Rain are likely to be an absolute trainwreck (even without Maria & Gavin flipping their sh** about someone /else/ dating her), but that doesn't mean I think Lynn is saying that they can just ignore Rudy's sexuality? We've had a bunch of examples of people who think Rain "cured" Rudy being portrayed as ignorant, bigoted and annoying already in this arc, so it's not like she didn't think this through! There's a big difference between Rudy deciding he can handle it and... well, how he actually handles it. I get the feeling Rain was kind of blindsided and M&G aren't exactly making her feel wanted currently, so I can see the temptation - affection, some social cover in a situation she's deathly afraid will lead to her outing, and someone who really does seem to like her for how she is (in whatever Rudy-ish way that manifests).
For all we know Rudy is a Kinsey 5, Rain is the first girl he's ever been attracted to enough to notice with, and his serious lack of respect for & screwups around her gender were a result of trying to convince himself that it was okay because she's "really a guy". I've seen weirder things and this isn't a case of someone deciding to "fix" a gay character in fan-fic: we're absolutely clear Rain is female and the only one here who knows Rudy's orientation is the author... and she's clearly determined to mess with her characters. ;)
I really hope you're right, Ceiti.
I don't like this relationship because Rudy already has acknowledged on multiple occassions that he likes men and also said he has trouble seeing Rain purely as the gender that she identifies as. I don't know if Rudy has changed his colors completely. I think this is a situation of Rain feeling lonely while Rudy being confused about his feelings for Rain.
Ummm...just in case no one noticed, this page is titled "Ruin". Somehow I don't think this will be very long term.
IM not sure how i feel about this. Im trans and i dont think i could allow myself to go along with a similiar situation. However...Raidy is now cannon.
Honestly, it's probably tacky for me to even get involved as I should just let the comic do the talking. But with that said, one of my biggest fears has been that people will interpret this turn of events just like I'm advocating a "cure for homosexuality".
As a transgirl and a lesbian, I know full well how NOT a choice things like this are, and I can promise I am claiming no such possibility of curing homosexuality or that being straight is "more right". It's kind of hard to defend my decision on the plot direction without spoiling things for the future. I'm just going to hope the readers will trust me on this one for a little while.
Ceiti brings up some good points though. ^_^
We only worry because we care.
Thank you, Lynn!
[@LittleLynn84: I understand the worry about letting your work speak for itself, but thanks - this is a twitchy topic for a lot of us.]
Hurrah, score another one for the Presumption of Authorial Evil! In general if I like a webcomic or TV show I find it's a very useful rule of thumb to assume that in the short run the writer(s) will think of the most interesting evil thing to do to their characters, then turn it up a couple of notches. Examples: this comic, Warehouse 13 S3's season finale, a large number of Questionable Content strips, and just about anything ever posted for Something*Positive....
To me, it seems that Rudy does not see Rain as a boy, but rather as a person who he likes very much, respects, and admires. He has been shaken up out of his self-centered world by someone who is much stronger than he is, someone who has as much or more to fear from the herd.
Rain has been so alone for so long that she is willing to accept intimacy from anyone who will look past what her gender is to see her for the person that she is trying to be.
Rudy and Rain are both blurring the gender lines, causing those who know them well to be very confused. Our society places so much emphasis on gender roles that it can be hard to see the person behind the label.
Ruin = RUdy + raIN, right?
That ship name is a bad omen. I like it. (MaRain shipper here)
Honestly, I can see how Rain might be that one rare exception for Rudy, but I still can't see their relationship working out well, based on their personalities.
Loving this comic to death. Screw gender! Screw sexuality! Love whoever makes you happy. I do have a feeling they probably won't last a long time, but I think you should always follow your heart, even when it leads you down a completely different path than the one you thought you should be on. Life's too boring when you follow the rules.
I KNEW IT GOD DAMN IT I FUCKING KNEW IT
AHHHH Ruin! I didnt think of that!
While I ship Maria x Rain and Rain x Kylie, I actually think this would be an interesting direction for the comic to take. I don't think a relationship between them invalidates Rain's gender or Rudy's orientation. If anything, I think it expands people's perspective and enriches the comic in a sense. Okay, so he might not be 100% gay, OR he could simply be interested in Rain /as a person/ regardless of anything else. And that simple fact makes his feelings more sincere and believable imo. I love the idea of transcending gender and sexual orientation, and although I suspect their "relationship" won't last or will end up serving a prelude-trigger for something else, I still appreciate it being included.
I really actually like this relationship ... I mean, Rudy is gay, okay, sure. He finds men physically attractive. Um, hello, Rain is physically male. Rudy thinks of her as a girl, but he can also accept her physical state and find that attractive, while also treating her like the female she wants to be treated as. It works out a lot better than Maria x Rain and Gavin x Rain ever could have. Just saying, you know.
Well, this is a relief. Problems with "pose as straight" aside.
