Those two hanging out? Oh, this ought to be interesting…
I don’t normally come right out and do this, but I want to address a little bit of reader backlash towards Fara lately. The idea is that the character is supposed to be snarky, but it seems many people are interpreting her statements/actions as mean or even cruel. This is pretty big failure on my part, so help me make things better. Am I just overdoing it? Should I be toning her down? And I don’t want to hear “you don’t have to change anything,” because the reactions she’s getting are not ones I wanted (trust me, I revel in it when I can make readers hate a character I want them to hate, but if people start hating on a character I want readers to like, I’m clearly doing something wrong).

I think that the problem is the whole issue with correct naming that trans people tend to have. Usually it's old names, rather than wrong female names, but it feels slightly dismissive, which clearly isn't how it's intended.
I would say tone her down a bit... I mean, she can be snarky all day, thats totally my style too... but constantly calling someone by the wrong name is a bit too far. I honestly didn't understand why she kept doing it as I didn't associate it with snarkyness at all. It just seems unnecessary.
I think might not be too harsh on Fara for getting Jessica's name wrong, if she was a bit appologetic about it or make a comment to show that she's not being serous when she called Jessica by the wrong name, just my thoughts, plus, for some strange reason, I am so hoping that Jessica and Heather become friends
I really wish I could do something with my hair. Im super jealous of Rain's hair style.
well, here's the thing. Not remembering the name can be done well (see Ken in Shortpacked). The big thing here is, as i said in the last comic, that name is part of a set of identity issues regarding transfolk. This means that it can amplify something that could be a running gag into the appearance of cruelty or denial. So, workable as a joke, just the issues concerning the 'target' for lack of a better turn makes it go sour.
I did feel like there might be a little spite in Fara's name-thing with Jessica, but that was because I got the impression that she was jealous of Rain's hero-worship and a little hurt that her position as "most-beloved adult" could be under threat.
That could be ME misinterpreting, but since you said you were worried about how readers picked up Fara I figure it's worth saying. Also, I do NOT dislike Fara for it. Yeah, it's a little childish and mean, but I find her an overall likeable character and her snarky jealous behavior (from where I'm sitting) seems understandable.
It is also true that while I firmly believe that trans people should have the freedom to be whomever they wish to be without facing societies scorn, I do not personally know any. It could be that I am simply ignorant of how important the name can be.
@Jaebird: "I did feel like there might be a little spite in Fara's name-thing with Jessica, but that was because I got the impression that she was jealous of Rain's hero-worship and a little hurt that her position as "most-beloved adult" could be under threat."
That should be a storyline. Holy shit, I love that idea.
I just took it as Fara was teasing Jessica. Like how you might jokingly call a friend bitch or something.
@LittleLynn84: I actually adore Fara. She is very open-minded, obviously cares very much for Rain, and I like the snarky part of her. I wouldn't change anything (I know you didn't want to hear that), but if you are looking to tone her down a bit, then maybe it would be appropriate for Fara to let Jessica in on her joke. Even a wordless grin from Fara after Jessica asked if she was doing it on purpose, followed by Jessica finally laughing about it maybe would have helped? I dunno. It's easy irl for snarky comments to cross the line and offend people. It only really works when the recipient is "in" on what's going on and can see the humor in it. I guess I'm saying that maybe it isn't Fara herself, but Jessica's (or other people's) reactions to it.
Hmm. Disaster waiting to have Heather happen to it.
I thought the name thing was really funny! I mean, Fara obviously respects Jessica, and she lets her stay in her home. Aside from the names (and believe me, Ive done worse to my friends in jest) she's been nothing but kind!
I actually really like Fara, her humor reminds me of ayana from hayate x blade (less violently of course). Ayana can flat out insult people and forget just about everyone's names but you know it's more of a joke than anything cause of how the other characters react to it. I could see how it would get misinterpreted for fara, but personally I feel like that has more to do with the reactions she gets. It seems like when she pokes fun, people seem genuinely annoyed by it. They don't act over the top enough to be ridiculous and not apathetic enough to be brushing it off, so it seems less like a joke and more like... well just saying things.
I really love fara but it seems like shes turning a bit jerky with the names.
I like Fara overall, but her continuing joke without any kind of pay-off or line is seeming a bit jerky.
I agree with @Jaebird on why I felt Fara was acting that way.
I haven't noticed anybody else comment on it so... Part of the reason so many people came to resent Fara wasn't really due to her snarkiness, at least not entirely. It also had a lot to do with you actually drawing Jessica looking physically annoyed. While it does make sense for you to depict her reacting that way, it shouldn't be a surprise that Fara would get the reaction from fans that she did. I mean really, In a trans friendly comic, showing a trans character being physically annoyed at something to do with names is bound to send the wrong message across.
However I think a few people were a little bit harsh on Fara. I mean, not thinking about how screwing up Jessica's name, either accidentally or as a running joke, (after she forgot the first few times) might annoy her could easily be a sign of the fact that Fara really doesn't think of Jessica as being any different from anybody else, and so she might not think to assume she needs to be extra sensitive of screwing up her name (as long as she uses female substitutions) just because she knows that Jess is trans.
Considering Fara's history of being fiercely defensive of Rain, her talk of having been there for somebody else in a similar situation, AND that the only times Jessica has commented on the name thing have been in a way that signifies she seems to find humour in it (she hasn't given Fara any direct sign it's annoying.. though people seem to be forgetting that), I think judging Fara badly is completely unfair.
Personally, I didn't think Fara meant anything by it, though I figured she ~was~ messing up her name on purpose- I've kinda been expecting Jessica to pull her aside and explain that she's not okay with that, and Fara to be all "Oh crud, sorry, I didn't mean anything by it- I was just teasing!" or something.
inb4 everyone is outed to everyone
I confuse names all the time. There was two co-workers whose names started with J and I always confused them. I think I just had their names filed under J in my memory and they both got linked together. It happens.
Well, first of all, I don't really get what's going on in the last two panels. Is Fara leaving the other three, or are Fara and Rain leaving the other two? I probably should remember which it's supposed to be from the last few pages, but eh, it's 0:31 atm.
As for Fara, Yes, she comes across as mostly just snarky to me. But like I've said before, she does get things awfully worng sometimes. She may have had good intentions in pushing Rain into some situations, but considering her situation that wasn't a good idea really, and given that Fara's supposed to be this awesome understanding parent, she should have known better than to take such risks. I don't know if you really need to change much about Fara. I like her snarkiness, she just needs to be a little more responsible sometimes.
Edit: Oh, it was only about the name thing? Well, that was just a silly joke I think that's run its course; time to move on. Not sure how others would feel about it, but I think it's rather different from calling someone by their old name. That'd be a really bad thing to do. I think Fara may have called Rain Ryan a few times more than necessary over the story so far, but I blame that more on mistakes by the author than on Fara intentionally doing that, if that makes any sense.
