This is where the chapter gets fun. ^_^
Incidentally, I don't think this is a terribly uncommon occurrence among trans folk (not that it's exactly a requirement either). Speaking purely for myself, any time growing up that I'd be told to "make a wish," only one thought ever came to mind (although, I wanted the opposite thing Vincent did... and I didn't shout out my wishes). And I took every opportunity! That's not just birthday cakes either. See also stars, wishbones, dandelions, eyelashes, necklace chains and - back when I was a religious kid - even outright prayer. I even considered including it on a Christmas list a couple times, but I was afraid my parents would read it before Santa saw, so I opted out. Looking back, I was a naive, little kid. Or maybe just desperate. XD
For what it's worth though, I STILL wish for the same thing on my birthday cakes. It's become like a reflex for me.
ANYway, given that Vincent is 35, this flashback would date back thirty years before the story's present day. So, this is SUPPOSED to be 1983. I had to do a Google Image search of that year to get an idea of how people should look to at least attempt accuracy, but I really don't know how well I did. It is kinda before my time (albeit only slightly). Looking at the dad, I think I got the glasses down though. XD
The "childhood story" Rain is referring to is, incidentally, the very first page. ;P
Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.
Well, if it helps, the hairstyles remind me of the '80s as seen in old photos of my family.
So... my parents wear glasses and my mom had hair like that... and my dad has a mustache back then. If the man was bald, I'd have to ask if you stole pictures of my family :P
And this is why you don't say your wish out loud when blowing the candles....
@comicgirl: Well, unlike the superstition behind saying your wish out loud, this one can still come true, assuming it hasn't already
A five-year-old who beats Castela over at Wapsi Square in the Blurting-Tings-Your-Family-Doesn't-Want-To-Hear category!
*rolling on the ground for laughing so much*
This is your best panel so far ! Looks at the parent's face !
On my 12th birthday, I had made a wish that I could be a woman. But when I tried to blow the stupid candles out, I found that those mother f*ckers had put in trick candles...needless to say I was pretty pissed.
YEAH PENIS *flips tables*
...I don't know XD I just love how she's laughing to death on the table...
I think this is my favorite page. Can I put it on tumblr?
(This may not belong right here but...)I love Rain. I read all of it so far, over a couple of days. I really love Ky as a character, she has helped me come to terms with my own genderfluidity (if that's a word). I would really love if there was more about Ky, even some artwork or something, that would be amazing.Such an underrated character.
As long as credit is given, please do share away~! ^_^
Yeah. Sorry for the utter lack of Kylie lately. It's hard to write in the kid that goes to the other school sometimes. XD But as it turns out, Kylie will actually be in a fair bit of the next chapter. So we'll be seeing her again very soon. ^_^
Oh my dog, they look like my parents in the 80s O_O
He looks so cute in panel 4...
I definitely had the same reaction jessica did, except I was sitting right next to one of my conservative friends, dying laughing (as quietly as I could,) to the point that she asked me if I was okay. I wasn't really sure how to explain either the comic or my positive reaction to it.
And I'm glad Ky is coming back soon. One of my favorite characters right there.
I was out laughing when I read this and it was really awkward because I didn't want my friends who were sitting next don't know im trans and I didn't want them to see that I was reading this xD
Laughing so hard...I think I damaged an organ....owwwww...
"I wish i had a penis!"
me:FFFFFFFFFFFFF-Oh my gosh XD
But would a five year old phrase it like that, or just wish to be a boy? Well, kids can be pretty explicit sometimes I guess.
Also, yeah, you got the early-80s look right.
