Oh. Oh! Ooooohhh~!
This update and the last were not scripted. In fact, Ana was not planned to be in this chapter at all. The original plan was to not even bring up this piece of information for like another four or five chapters. However, there has been a lot of debate surrounding Ana's character, and I would say a good number of people had a decent idea of where I was going with her. And with people catching on, I didn't want to drag it out longer than necessary (in an effort to try not to repeat the Maria x Emily thing that MOST people figured out much sooner than I'd anticipated). I'm learning. XD
So, pat yourself on the back if you picked up on this much of Ana's story sooner than now. And happy surprise twist page if you didn't. Perhaps the last page makes a little bit more sense now if you reread it. ;)
Still, with all that said, I hesitate to call this page a "reveal". Not because a lot of people guessed this far. Rather, it's because we're not done, and nobody (as far as I saw) had the whole thing. Ana's pretty complicated. So expect to be learning much more about her in the future...
...just not next time. Scene change. XD
Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.
And don't forget, Rain - Volume 1 and 2 are available at Lulu!
I'm happy for her, and I'm sure that Rain and Ana are going to help each other a lot eventually.
"Error in judgment"? Was she born intersex, or am I reading more into the wording than I should?
@Morrigan_DeLevain: That's what I thought, too. Then I read the TVTropes page and it said that Ana is transgender. I sent @LittleLynn84 a message here on Smackjeeves to ask her just a few minutes ago.
I don't maintain the Rain TV Tropes page (I like looking at it, but I don't contribute). It's purely done by the readers. And while I haven't looked at it in a while, there HAVE been errors based on assumption before.
That said, it's never been directly confirmed whether Ana is or isn't whatever people may assume she is. Therefore, I cannot confirm or deny it either way at this time.
Reading a little too much into it. Quite simply, they thought she was a boy until she pointed out that she was not.
That was my mind. It was just blown.
That explains SO, SO MUCH! Glad to see her father seems to accept her, but I'm wondering what mom thinks of it...
I'm kinda worried. :\
@LittleLynn84: I knew it I knew it! gavin's in for a surprise. so's Rain.
This makes no sense. How could she then not know what cis means?
Actually, a lot of people don't know what cis means. That includes trans folk.
But what I was going for then was that she was playing dumb. She had a secret she didn't want Gavin to know about. So when this key word came up, she pretended she'd never heard it before. It'd be safer for her to not know than to risk the possibility of Gavin saying, "Oh, you actually know that term?"
@LittleLynn84: Oh, that actually makes sense =^^=
On the other hand, not drawing attention to it at all would probably be the safest. Did she hope Gavin would say more about his apparently non-cis friends?
It's a possibility.
To be honest, until about a year or two ago, I had never heard of the term cis. And I've been dealing with transgender feelings for many years now. Not sure where I first saw the term, but I think it was a web comic.
Plus with the terms and definitions seeming to alter, change and add as the years pass, it is possible that someone who spends more time moving, and alone, or with just her father, may not have ever seen or heard the term.
tyfzytxftrcftxcrtrfadstr Is Ana intersexual??? Cuz that's what I'm thinking! I first, I thought she was trans, and she could be, but now I'm thinking that she's intersexual!
Huh, maybe Rain's Transceiver works better then she thinks.
I'm surprised nobody's noticed how crumpled up the photo looks... Way to sneak that in there, Lynn!
I guessed this from the second Gavin thought she was attractive.. oops.
I'm guessing she's intersex, though, because of the fact that there's already enough transwomen in this story. idk. Some variety is nice.
Intersex I hope so, not many out there in webcomics... Kinda a bit draining reading lately.
Why is each and every transperson in a webcomic super passable? This is depressing.
THANK YOU SO MUCH Lynn! WOW, an intersexed character! It reminds me so much of myself, that was born intersexed. It was at 5 years of age that my parents made the decision, the wrong one, to raise me as male. Did I pass as male? HELL NO! Now I'm going through therapy and transitioning. Unlike some inters, I'm 60% female, with XX chromosomes and figure to match. It was torture in school, and I had no friends. With that being said, I would like to see a character that is non-passable, trying to present as male and not being entirely successful, and being intersexed. It would reflect the misery of those of us that are not diagnosed correctly by the medical community. By the way, the intersexed make up 1% of the population. You would be surprised how many of us there are!
Kudos to Lynn! High five to you honey! This was a really good one.
I just discovered Rain through the r/lgbteens subreddit less than a week ago, and by now I've read the entire story! (it's that good) amazing as always! Soon, I'm going to buy the paperback volumes as well.
@Thera: I don't know. I'm trying to imagine the opposite being anything but depressing, but it's an unfortunate reality some of us have to live.
I did wonder if Ana was trans* :)
I hope that means affirming therapy, and not "reparative therapy" or something :/
Hmm, you know you have a daughter when your daughter tells you she's a girl, not when she asks for a dress. There's no reason a boy, at the age of 3 - ie having had relatively little conditioning regarding prescribed gender roles - wouldn't necessarily like how he looks in a dress. Although obviously he shouldn't have assumed she was a boy in the first place either
@Morrigan_DeLevain: oh, good question!
I knew an FTM who didn't know what 'trans man' and 'trans woman' meant, and those are way more common terms than 'cis'.
@Morrigan_DeLevain: i thought the same thing so just gotta wait and see
@Thera: For Ana shes been living her life as a girl since she was 3, which means she would of more than likely started hormones and transitioned around when she was 12 or so, around the age puberty starts, so its not that surprising that she's so passable.
Gonna be honest with ya, i thought she was just gonna move away again, I was not expecting this twist at all. But a question I do have is, where is she going?
I should have known! Another good post :)
Ok, I was just introduced to this story in the past couple weeks and finally made it to the current updates.
I have to say, I love this story, I adore you for making this for all of us!
I have to give a shout-out for Gavin, who is the character I identify with I guess. Cis-gendered hetero male with a wide circle of friends across the spectrum. (Though not as closely together as this group! They still mostly go to the same school, which is a big help)
Anyhow, I feel kinda bad for Gavin. He had feelings for Rain, but she she started dating Rudy. That turned bad when Rain realized her true feelings (well, bad for Rudy and Gavin, good news for Rain and her future romance!)
My OTP for Gavin is Ky. And he missed his opportunity twice. Once when he was still on the fence about Rain, and Ky ... gave him the revelation of his young life in the janitor closet. Now he is interested in Ana (which may be a good thing) and Kylie admits she has had interest in him. But he finds this out AFTER he starts wooing Ana. And now Drew steps in.
Gavin Gavin Gavin. Never get's a break. But that's what makes a good story.
Keep up the good work Jocelyn!
Sorry for asking, but what's the difference between trans and intersex? I'm a bit confused and I don't know terms that well.
@Narkota16: A trans person identifies with a different gender than what they were assigned at birth. An intersex person was born with genitalia that wasn't clearly "male genitalia" or "female genitalia" (like someone born with a vulva and testicles, for example. There's more than one way someone could be intersex.) I think they're not mutually exclusive terms.
I'm glad there's still more to find out about this character! Also OMIGOSH SHE HAS AN OCTI. That makes me like her more. Bubbles was one of my favorite cartoon characters as a kid.
Gniiiih... No new update yet ?... I hope Jocelyn is fine ! :/ And I DO want to know what happens next ! :D
Talk about perfect person for Gavin :P .. or Rain :D .. Damn, don't know who to ship, both perfect matches, augh. I'll just cheer for both, then I can be happy either way.
As far as being trans or intersex, I can tell you from personal experience that the medical community usually have blinders on, and "assign" a sex at birth if one has ambiguous genitalia. It depends on the geographic location, and the physician. If they don't do a test for chromosomes, then they literally flip a coin and then you become a boy or girl regardless of chromosomes or brain gender. There is a push to stop this practice, but it is still done far too often. At least her father was more understanding than most, but a lot of the time this is not the case.
Since this strip still takes place during school, I wondered how Ana handled PE classes? If she's intersexed with a larger clit, that would be noticeable, and would either have to change elsewhere, or get a physician's letter excepting her from the horrors of having to change in front of people.
So is Ana intersexed? I would like to think so, since that is what I identify with. If she is not, it's no big deal, but the trials and tribulations of being intersexed are more than being trans, and I would like to see that story told.
Whew, glade I a not the only one who thought intersex the second the father said he made a mistake. All I could think of was that book, Fool For Love by Lisa Lees, with that cool cover from Jade Gordon.
There is another reason to think she might be / probably is intersex, people.
Back when the t-shirt was advertised, she mentioned that she couldn't have the Pan or IS people on it, since they hadn't been revealed.
Which means there was, even at the time, plans to intro someone who's IS.
Maybe it's just me, but I find the reveal (well, not much of one for most readers it seems) to be a bit awkward here. Why that piece of paper with the names on it? If Ana's been a girl since age three, why is her dad suddenly now reminiscing about it (other than story purpose of course)?
Also a bit jelly that she got to grow up with the right gender and puberty. I wonder how Rain will feel about that when she finds out.
Or maybe she won't. Ana's very much stealth. And with good reason really. If you pass that perfectly, and have so few memories of being the worng sex, there's really not much reason to want to tell people.
Wait, this was supposed to be a surprise?
Dang, you love discluding logic by making every main character of yours gay or trans. Especially in this scenario, it is inlogical.
Note: I don't hate gays or trans, or anything in between.
Every main character except for all the ones that aren't, you mean? Like Gavin, or any of the other classmates outside of the main friend group, or Rain's siblings. The queer and trans characters only make up about a third of the cast (and I'd consider that a low ratio, to be honest).
I know I shouldn't take the bait, but why is this particular scenario so illogical?
sorry, I didn't mean to be rude. It's just, two transgendered boys at one high school? I dunno. Sorry if I offended you.
and for the record, I said MAIN characters.
I'm not offended. I just hear that more than I like. It's not really that unlikely though. In my personal experience with the people I know, and with how I grew up, there'd be a really promising chance there are other trans folk in that school - closeted and afraid to speak up - that Rain will unwittingly never interact with.
Also, Rain is not a transgender boy. If they identify as female, they are female. Hence, Rain would be a trans girl (regardless of the conditions of her birth).
This seems like a heartwarming panel. So cute!
Damn it there was no one to take the bet with me, I knew Ana had that secret...damnit! I could've made an easy buck, still, I CALLED IT
