Most of the time, when I start a new "not-in-school" scene, I kinda just think up the character's outfit on the fly when I'm drawing them for the first time. For one reason or another, I decided to plan ahead a little bit with Chapter 22 (probably because I had to have everybody's design available to me for the chapter page), so I drew this back when we were maybe halfway through Chapter 21.
Many of them went through no further changes after this. Kylie, Rudy, Rain, Emily and Ana are presented in the chapter as they are shown here. Maria and Gavin went through some minor changes. Chanel saw many major changes.
Maria was originally planned to experiment with her growing hair. I definitely wanted her hair tied back, but my first thought was pigtails. The more I looked at it though, the more I really didn't like that look on her. Maybe I'll try again as her hair gets longer (I seemed to like her Pandora hair way back the Halloween party, so it may yet work again).
Gavin's change is subtle, and might not even be noticed by most. In the chapter, his shirt depicts a sideview of the head of Mad GigaKaizer X. Here though, we see his shirt has a cross-like symbol. It's yet another subtle reference to one of my other story concepts, called Impure (that symbol being a particularly significant object from the story). The reason for the change is mostly because I hadn't mentioned Mad GigaKaizer X in a long time, so I wanted a reference (however subtle) to at least be there (especially, when there's a whole anime convention arc coming in the near future). Not to mention, the Impure thing wouldn't actually mean a heck of a lot to most people (besides me). Although, with that in mind, that symbol has made an appearance in the story somewhat recently. ;)
Chanel experienced several overhauls for over a month leading up to her appearance in the chapter. I knew I wanted to give her a gothic lolita-ish dress for her date with Maria, but apparently, that's not my strong suit. It went through a number redesigns before coming out the way it finally did (I think this was the first design, but I don't seem to still have the others). I ended up sharing what would end up being the final design on my personal Facebook page, not saying who would be wearing it, to see what people thought. My friends seemed to like it, so I felt like I finally had a winner.
I know my designs aren't terribly complex, but I do try my best to change things up once in a while to keep things interesting. So I hope you like this. ^_^
Chanel's outfit looks like cosplay really. It has a Final Fantasy look to it when I see it in this picture. Looks like a white mage with weird alternate coloring besides the white.
Still looks good though.
Why does Ky always look uncomfortable? Please make her happier!
I never realized how much taller than everyone else Gavin is... 0_0
@Guest: Given the content of the chapter, I'd say Ky's frequent discomfort is due to her fluidity. She said it herself, it's not like she wakes up in the morning, decides if she feels like a boy or a girl and then stays that way throughout the day. Sometimes she'll change from one to the other in the middle of the day and sometimes she's in a state where she's both or neither. She gets uncomfortable because sometimes her current gender changes and she can't change her appearance to match it.
@Jaebird: I understand that; I am fluid as well. That is why I want Ky to be happy. She has more support than I have but is no happier than I am. All of Ky's friends know who she is and would accept and support him during a dysphoric episode.
@Guest Oh, I see. Sorry about that, I took it the wrong way. :)
@Jaebird - Zomg, I had wondered if gender could change during the day, but hadn't even thought that would lead to dysphoria too. I'd pictured genderfluidity as 'being okay with either, but just preferring one or the other sometimes'. Wow, so gender identity could completely flip in a matter of hours sometimes, like mood?
Food for thought ^_^
@Kimiko: To be honest, as an entirely cisgendered person, I can't say I have any personal experience with one or the other. This is how I've interpreted what I read in the comic with the little, pre-existing knowledge of gender fluidity I had. (I knew about transgenderism before reading Rain but this was the first place I came across Genderfluid as a term, though I had unknowingly role-played as a character who I can now say was probably genderfluid.) But yes, what I gathered from Ky's explanations was that sometimes her gender identity suddenly changes and that leads to, at the very least, a feeling of discomfort, if not full blown dysphoria.
@Jaebird: Hmm, I see. Guess I'll do some research.
Gender fluidity can work this way, yes. It doesn't have to, but it's definitely a thing. "Your experience may vary."
