The moral of the story is that no matter what ships you don't think exist: they exist. No matter how implausible they may be, someone out there has thought of it. Whether they're canon or not is another story (the gross lack of canon is Rain's problem with this pairing by the way). That said, I can't figure out if I'm more amused by Emily's reaction or Kellen's. XD
For the sake of argument, I'm gonna go ahead and say it's not hentai though. Rain and Emily are under 18, so I'm not 100% sure Rain could buy something like that no matter how much Maria might want it (I don't know if they check for that at cons). So let's say it's more of the kissy sort of girl-love, rather than the really dirty, naughty kind (it just uses a pic from the obligatory "swimsuit chapter" to be more enticing on shelves). XD
Artistically, the fancomic cover was a total nightmare to draw. I originally planned to include showing a table filled with "girl-love" ships (canon or not), but dialed it back when I was seriously struggling with this. If the image itself wasn't tricky enough, the only reference I have of Aneko is terribly drawn, at a weird angle, and happened well over 500 pages ago. So even though I wasn't really, it felt like I was designing a new character on the fly as I went. And the end result looks a wee bit too much like Pandora (you know, that other Rainverse anime character I haven't mentioned in a while), which I totally didn't notice until weeks after finishing the art for this page. So, yeah. I love this page for the humor; but otherwise I actually kind of hate it.
Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.
I agree with Emily, it is pretty hot :P
@Terastrasza: Yep. What wrong with lesbian shipping?
@Pyrii: I think Rain was more shocked about the /specific/ ship
And Kellen looks somewhat stunned. Guess she assumed that Emily, being A. Pregnant and B. A catholic school student, would be straight as an arrow :P
@The Aussie Bloke: On the slightly negative side, it kinda tells you something about her. She asked "What exactly is your relationship with [Rain], again?", and if she truly accepted Rain as who she really is, then that level of perception (because let's face it, it probably is more than just sisterly love there--confirmed on one half, and implied on the other) would let her know that Emily isn't.
Oh fandom shipping, how much do I love thee? Let me count the ways... Seriously, everything that happens here is fabulous. Maria being a shipper rings true to me, although she really shouldn´t find it embarrassing. Hardcore fans are what makes the world go round, and for LGBTQIAP+ fans, shipping is often a vital connection to the feeling of legitimacy and to a sense of community.
I can also confirm that no matter how obscure the pairing, there is at least one other person who ships it as much as you do, and at least one fanwork of it, even though some OTPs really deserve a lot more attention than what they get. If you don´t mind the question, Jocelyn, what other pairings were you going to include, so we can get an idea of what you´re into?
As for Kellen´s reaction, I´m with the Aussie Bloke. Emily threw her for a loop, and I for one couldn´t be happier about it. Emily´s awesomeness knows no limits, as usual!
Other pairings I was going to use were just various sets of my own characters from other stories. I admit though, they probably wouldn't mean much to anyone but me. We will hear about at least one another though (and they may be characters some people actually know about), so I'm going to keep hush-hush about it for now anyway.
What I'm into though? I tend to be a stickler for canon, but every once in a rare while, something comes along that I just approve. My favorites are a bit cliche, but Ymir x Christa or Madoka x Homura are big ones. I've read at least two really sweet fancomics revolving around Ymir and Christa and I love them so. I haven't actually read any Madoka ones, but there are some really cute fan artworks. And just yesterday, I read this super adorable one about a Pokemon Trainer and a Team Magma Grunt (I loved it so much, I ended up reading it three times).
In the end, I'm just a sucker for love stories and all that mushy stuff (with any combination of gender pairings, though I know I tend to gravitate to "girl x girl", even in my own writing). Regardless, I really prefer the tamer, sweeter, kissier stuff. The more "NOT hentai" it is, the better (I'm pretty darn asexual, after all). XD
@LittleLynn84: But HomuMado is canon, isn't it?
Who says you can't ship canon? ^_^
It's impossible not to ship Madoka/Homura as far as I'm concerned. One of the most heartbreaking love stories ever conceived, honestly.
And thanks for answering! (I'm pretty addicted to subtext and fanon myself, and manga and anime have a wealth of goodies in that area.)
@LittleLynn84: I was all about HomuraxMadoka... till I watched the film x_x
usually, the selling of such material i.e. adult or near adults usually varies from state to state and country. if actually will able to handle it probably means lower age rating.
Another hand given rain and her comrades here. And all being girls then he might willing to sell to them.
in my experience usually willing to bend a little bit more for girls have enough guts to come to the counter then guys.
also means to the three girls here could pass adult. rain is probably the least mature of the three in actions and attitude here
Worst case rain older sister can buy it for them
It doesn't look like adult material though. We get to see straight couples doing things like looking into each others' eyes and caressing cheeks all the time, so a pairing like this, if there are no actual hentai stuff inside (never judge a book by its cover!), it probably would be fine for Rain to buy it.
Wait, who is she in conversation with in the flashback?
It's Maria. In this scene:
Essentially, the flashback on this page is the very next thing to happen at that time.
Let's face it; if it WAS KaminarixPandora... Maria would probably explode with glee.
@SailorGwyn: Was just going to point out the example of Korrasami. xD
Funny story: Korrasami was one of those weird ships that, when I was first told about it, I thought it was completely ridiculous (this was sometime in between the end of Book 3 and the time I started watching Book 4), but then the instant a moment popped up in the show (the dinner scene, IIRC), it was the only Korra relationship I supported from then on. :P
Seems Maria's gaydar wasn't the only one pinging at Aneko, eh?
I wonder what Kellen is thinking there. Is she shocked that doujinshi exist? Shocked by Emily's interest? Wanting to read it herself? (hey, you never know what might open someone's eyes)
And where did Aiken wander off to?
(and I agree that Kellen looks cute in this outfit ^_^)
So you're saying that someone has already thought of rationalist!furry!Professor Flitwick / zombie!macro!B'ellana Torres?
Alright, who thinks that we are going to see some JocelynXRain fancomics at Center-con. >_>
I think last time I went to a -con, there wasn't much doujinshi. I think there was only one Ace Attorney doujinshi book (featuring the most commonly shipped pairing) and that was about it. >w<
Speaking of yuri, can anyone recommend any? Hentai or non-hentai, but ideally romance/plot-heavy. I tried reading Strawberry Panic one time, but it was horrible, the writer is all "what am consent?" :/
Well, there's plenty of stuff, but that all depends on what you're thinking of. In terms of manga, I can't recommend http://www.lililicious.net/ enough. It's a scanlation group, and they have a vast amount of good stories.
If you were thinking about anime, there are also several series I would heartily recommend, but more details about your tastes would be great (genre, tolerance for silly/serious moments, etc).
And then there's the wonderful world of fanworks, which is endless but might be daunting due to its sheer size and complete lack of filter about what gets posted...
@r4di4r: thanks ^_^
I love silly AND serious moments O_O :P and I pretty much like all genres
Sorry it took me a little while to answer. For canon yuri of the non-hentai genre, in no particular order:
- Kannazuki no Miko (mecha, adventure, dramatic, one moment of non-con that is depicted as awful but still. Good though, and some very good fanfic of it if you liked)
- Aoi Hana (slice of life, complex, sometimes tender and poetic. Love it. From the same creator as Hourou Musuko, which has trans* themes and rocks to the Moon and back.)
- Maria-sama ga Miteru, or MariMite (melodramatic, Catholic schoolgirls, long, with some fascinating characters. Sei FTW!)
- Utena (too complex for words. One of the best anime of all time. Warning though, a lot of dark themes, some awful non-con moments -which are shown as such, but still-, and it will mess with your mind as much as your heart)
- Simoun (also incredibly complex. I wanted a second season! A very interesting take on gender too. Adventure of the military priestesses kind. That anime deserves a lot more recognition, it's fabulous)
There are a lot more! I haven't even mentioned Moretsu Pirates, BlueDrop: Tenshi-tachi no Gikyoku, Candy Boy, etc, etc....
I'm always available to discuss this more, if you're interested. Hope something above makes you happy.
@Allie: I'm not sure if it technically counts, but I'd heartily recommend Jacqueline Carey's novel Santa Olivia. Carey once described it as "post-punk desert urban fantasy about girl’s love and boxing."
I can't really describe it better than that, except to say that the romance is beautiful and adorable.
Have you ever heard of Lavender Town? I hear it's a pretty good girl-love story. ;P
And before I cause too much confusion, Lavender Town is something I wrote pre-Rain. It was never finished (and will probably be rewritten before it is finished), but it was my first attempt at seriously writing queer characters and it was pretty well received. If you want romance, it's there. If you want plot, it's there. If you want drama, just remember who wrote it... it's there. XD
It doesn't have anything to do with Pokemon though, so don't be confused by the title. ^^;
@LittleLynn84: haha thanks, I've been meaning to read Lavender Town :) I did mean anime or manga though
@Allie: The best girl-girl love story I have ever had the pleasure of reading is a small manga known as "Octave". It's one of the most tender, heartwarming, *human* stories out there.
@Ranger: Thanks, I'll check it out :)
@Allie: How can you guys forget Sakura Trick?! That had more Yuri kissing than I have ever seen EVER! Best non hentai Yuri I've seen
If there's an anime with 2 or more female characters, there's lesbian yaoi of it. Every time.
@Dragon: Just so you know, lesbian yaoi is called yuri. Yaoi just refers to guys
There is no limit to the million faced legend that is fanfiction/doujinshi. The good, the bad, the seemingly impossible all converging into a singularity of epic flails and squeals.Canon, Subtext, crack ship if you can sell it to me I might just sail with you. The key of course is writing chemistry and hells bells if I'm not shipping the British Navy out of business with Raven/Jinx. And with that I part with fingers crossed hoping for the weather to be a bit "Rainily" today! XD
" (I don't know if they check for that at cons). "(LittleLynn84).
What I've gathered during my time at Otakon is they section off the 18+ stuff to keep the rest of the con relatively all age accessible and people need to bring their id to acquire a wristband. That's only from the cons I've been to and Comic con and Katsu con usually have a similar setup. So I'd say its a safe bet this con would be similar in that respect.
" I'm gonna go ahead and say it's not hentai though. Rain and Emily are under 18, so I'm not 100% sure Rain could buy something like that no matter how much Maria might want it"(LittleLynn84).
I want Rain to ship this ship so bad. I feel though at first she'd be opposed to this one doujin in particular because it seems a bit dirty she'd fall for the fluffy angst romance (speaking from experience here). Also really loving Emily's reaction like "hmm... pretty hot, I can dig it". Again something I'm all too familiar with XD
TL;DR long live fandom! =)
@Rosalie Jones: that makes sense :) (cordoned off area I mean)
That's pretty much the way it was at MTAC when I went a few years ago. They asked for my ID because I wanted to go into the 18+ sections, and then gave me a wristband. Nobody without a wristband was allowed into the 18+ areas.
I went to 1 yaoi room and 1 yuri room (seeing as how I'm both pan and an androgyne, I get to enjoy both worlds. :P). More women in the yaoi room (pretty much confirmed everything I already knew from my friends in anime club at school), and more men in the yuri room (no duh).
Speaking of my school's anime club, one year, some guy got asked by the yearbook people what his favorite kind of anime was, and he said "Hentai, it has the most action". XD
@Grenartia: Lol, did they put it in the yearbook? XD
I just watched the last episodes of LOK and damn, i'm sad it ended, the serie was good though.
thanks people for reminding me korra was ending.went over to youtube and was happy with the way it was done especially cause the creators wanted it done that way. by the way, love your self-portrait.
Kamineki sounds like Kaminari with cat ears and tail :p
