Okay, this one's kind of a doozy, but let's get straight to the point.
Firstly, are you satisfied with Aiken's explanation for everything? Is there hope for him after all despite what's happened in the past? How do you think Jessica would feel if she were hearing this?
And why exactly do you think Rain thanks Aiken?
Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.
I LOVE YOU AIKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN
I'm satisfied. I can understand that it must be hard for him to accept everything that's going on, but he's trying. that's all I can ask for. There's defiantly hope for him and I think that if Jessica heard all of that, she might want to start over with Aiken? Or at least try to be his friend.
I think Rain thanked Aiken because she realizes that he's despite how he feels on the inside.
for being honest about his feelings.
It's good to see that Aiken is finally beginning to accept Rain, if not entirely understand. I particularly like how he calls her baby sis. Go Aiken!
@StillTooLazyToRegister: I don't think he ever will understand: really, you can't understand unless you're living it. To cisgender people, gender is a completely invisible part of themselves, something they're not aware of. To ask a cisgender person to understand being transgender is akin to asking them to perceive something with a sense they don't have. That said, Aiken did the best he can do here: he realized that whether or not he understands, all that matters is that Rain does what makes her happy.
They're so cute!
Rain knows (and i can guess) what it took for Aiken to get to this point...
And I can believe Aiken's explanation. It may seem like a fast turnaround from his attitude at Christmas, but he's had weeks of comic-time to think about it!
Jessica? Debatable. She might be glad to hear him say that, but still not be able to get past the hurtful things he said when they broke up. And even if she could, I don't think Aiken's ready to be in an actual relationship with a trans person, and Jessica would probably know that.
Rain? I think she's thanking him both for sending Jessica, and for trying to be as supportive as he is currently capable of.
And I was hoping Rain would give Aiken a hug! :)
The reason Rain is thanking Aiken is simple, Aiken has put her happiness before his own comfort because he loves her and shows full support even though Rain knows that he is not completely used to everything he is trying his best to be the brother that she needs at this time.
There's hope for Aiken, just like there's hope for Kellen, because it's their sister making them face their prejudice. When a prejudice is learned from a parent or guardian and they pass away, it's even harder to let go of. It takes a long time or a bond as strong as family to beat it. You try and rationalize it, guard it, enforce it, because it's something they gave you, something passionate. It feels like if you let go of it, you'll be letting go of another part of them. And how could they be wrong? They couldn't have room for baseless hatred and still have room to love you, right?
But you can't know what started that hatred in them. It could have been their family when they were growing up, or their childhood friends, or one absolute jerk that made them so angry that they forgot the jerk was a person and they began to hate everything that defined them. It could have been as simple as a lack of understanding and a fear of the unknown.
Everyone makes mistakes, everyone makes errors in judgment, everyone is simply completely wrong from time to time. You don't have to hate them to know they were wrong. You don't have to rethink everything else they taught you.
Hatred gets you in the history books, but love is what gets you remembered. Remember your loved ones, and remember your brothers and sisters and cousins.
I somewhat selfishly wrote this for me so here's your punchline: Stop hating people dammit I despise writing history reports.
He said 'women' and 'baby sis'!
Does he need to understand? And how does he define understanding? Being able to relate to Rain and Jess? (probably difficult/impossible if he's cis and comfortable the way he was born). But he wants them to be happy and seems to have accepted their choice.
Although, are there family counselling options available for him and would he take them?
I think I'd be more satisfied if he did undertake some kind of counselling with Rain or something.
I don't know about counseling *with* Rain, as Aiken's situation is rather different from hers.
However, the Identities clinic is where Jessica was going while she shared an apartment with him, so it's likely to be close to where he lives. And I'd bet they have some sort of program for families of transgenders.
@Don Edwards: It isn't correct to say "transgenders." Transgender isn't a noun. Try "transgender people," it's proper / not disrespectful. Thanks
NOT getting into another argument about whether adjectives can be nouned...
"Women" and "Baby Sis" made my smile, too. :)
Aiken seems to be quite observant. I guess that helps him see things better, and let he realizes that, Rain is happier as she is now, and she haven't changed from being his precious sibling. Even if he doesn't actually understand things, he is willing to be a nice person for Rain's sake. And that is good.
I like how you contrasted the two older siblings because in a certain sense they're both saying the same thing: "I don't understand any of this but it's important to you so I'll try my best to go along with it."
The difference is that what Kellen sees is Baby Sibling "faking it" and pretending to be someone they are really not, so she has mixed feelings about supporting such behavior. What Aiken sees is Baby Sibling being basically the same person they always were but happier and more confident, so he can tell the change is good for Rain even though he may not understand exactly why.
(BTW Is Kellen the oldest? I get the feeling maybe she didn't know Rain/Ryan as well as Aiken did, which would make sense if there was a big age gap between them.)
@just another rain-beau: Kellen and Aiken are twins.
@Kimiko_0: D'oh, I somehow managed to forget that! Thank you.
Yes, I'm satisfied. He's very good at explaining himself. He accepts them in spite of not understanding it and accepts that it's not for him to say what's right.
I think she would feel happy that he's coming around, but also sad that it happened too late for them. They could maaaaybe work past things and get back together much, much farther down the road after enough time has passed for the wounds from the breakup to not be so fresh and Aiken to have more time to adjust his thinking, but they could also end up simply being friends. Either ending would be nice. :)
Rain thanks Aiken because he's being honest and accepting her for who she is instead of judging. And because he acknowledged his earlier behavior was wrong.
Yay Aiken! <3
Now if only Kellen could see things a little more from that perspective
Aww ^_^ Aiken's being pretty awesome here. *virtu-hug*
It's kinda sad in a way that this is the closest most cis people can get to understanding trans people. They accept, but don't really get it.
As for Jessica×Aiken, I think they have a good chance of working things out. It'll take time and effort though to get over the hurtful things he said to Jessica, and probably also for him to be intimate with her again (it's one thing to talk the talk, but another to walk the walk).
I think Rain thanked Aiken because he made that effort to understand and accept her and Jessica and because he cares. Ideally everyone would be both accepting and understanding of course, but even then it's still that he cares so much about them.
@Kimiko_0: I don't know, I mean, Emily's cis, and she got it. But then again, Emily is pretty amazing, so I do believe your point stands.
I'm satisfied - and what's more I think giving Aiken this attitude is good writing.
The sad fact is, if everyone COULD understand dysphoria the first time they heard about it, there wouldn't be a prejudice problem. Aiken is a good example of someone who honestly can't seem to get it, but he can see that his little sister needs this so he's going to do his best to accept it, even if he can't understand it. I think it's a more realistic way for him to accept Rain (and Jessica) than if his views had done a complete 180.
One down, one to go....
@phoebeburgh: More like 'most of the world to go' but Kellen is a good place to start and Aiken will help.
"Firstly, are you satisfied with Aiken's explanation for everything?"
Yeah, I think so. My mum went through a similar process, although she wasn't quite as resistant to begin with as Aiken was
"Is there hope for him after all despite what's happened in the past?"
If my mum's any indication, then yes :) Although it will probably require some effort from Rain that she shouldn't have to make.
"And why exactly do you think Rain thanks Aiken?"
For turning out not to be such a scumbag after all, I guess. I mean, that's not something she should have to thank him for, but I certainly empathise with the feelings that would make her do so anyway
I squeeed out load, kinda surprised my parents. I sorta called this in the previous comic's comments and I love that it's working out this way.
Aiken's explanation (and the entire dialogue) is so perfect, it brought a tear to my eye. This is what growth and love and respect look like, even when understanding is incomplete. Aiken valued his sister's happiness above his pride, above the rigidity of his value system, and that legitimizes Rain's humanity in a way that transcends words. Such a beautiful page.
AAAH so adorable I love this SO MUCH! :D
At least Rain's brother is trying/ That is always good. Sure he may not fully support it, but he is trying to get there to help Rain.
Ahhh, my emotions! x'3
I'm not crying, there's just emotion leaking out of my eyes.
I... it's just... Did Aiken turn into me and say everything I wanted to say to my childhood friend? Well, I mean, when it comes to addressing a childhood friend, Gavin already did that better in chapter 1 or two, but that was so long ago it doesn't even matter anymore.
Perfect. At least your trying to understand
@LittleLynn84: Understanding isnt required , at least in my opinion, because how can someone truely understand what it is like to be trans unless they are? Acceptance, which is what Aiken is doing now is what matters and that is why she is thanking him, for simply accepting.
Aiken is officially my favorite character from now on... Until someone else outdoes his awesomeness.
YAY FOR AIKEN!!!!!!!
Wow, Aiken is being really humble here. Perhaps even more so than I would want him to be. I mean, I really don't want to watch the guy grovel like this - I already really like the way he turned around ^_^
I had a good feeling about him since he gifted his sister a Yuu U for Christmas. He's just a really great guy that ended up in a situation he didn't know how to deal with.
