"Social justice warriors" are an abusive cult. Emily is like the polar opposite of an SJW, she is actually supportive and understanding without all the "kill all cishet white men" tumblr bullshit.

@Anon: "social justice warrior" is basically just a slur against anyone who gives a poo about social justice. Or at least, it's intended as a slur, even though fighting for social justice is an indisputably positive thing...

@Allie: It's a way to dismiss someone without thinking by lumping in people actually trying to make a change in the world with teenagers first experimenting with social awareness.

@Anon: Kellen's use of the term "social justice warrior" here is pretty accurate to its usual use -- "person I don't like and is vaguely connectable to activism of some kind".

(Fun game... pull up your list of Evil Es Jay Doubelyew Cult Blogs one day and count how many of them actually unironically list "SJW" in their self-description.) (spoiler: few)

@Anon: That's the distinction between a "social justice warrior" v. a "social justice activist," or just an activist. Anyone who considers themselves a SJW are usually the type to not listen to reason and scream at people to kill themselves.

@Claira: Honestly, most of the people I know who do call themselves SJWs tend to be pretty reasonable, and certainly don't yell at people to kill themselves. In fact, the people I see who call other people SJWs ARE the ones who tend to be unreasonable, and who take great pleasure in screaming at people to kill themselves. There have been a few exceptions in both cases, but this is my experience.

...Have you been browsing TERF sites?
The unironic use of SJW is pretty telling.

FFS Kellen, you are digging yourself deeper into the Hole of Unredeemableness, do a 180, get out, and start being a better person.
Please, i want you to be a good person.

why did Kellen get so uncomfortable about the "misgendering herself" comment?

Kellen is already slipping up with her pronouns. It took her less time than Aiken from the time of meeting Rain in person (granted, she had the grace of prior knowledge) to subconsciously beginning to accept that she is a girl. No matter how she slips along the way, she is already showing remarkable progress.

I took a look, and he's kinda right.

Rain is more feminine-looking than Kellen is. If you look at Kellen in this page, yeah, she looks vaguely like a girl, but compared to Rain, she might as well be androgynous.

@Allie:

You're right. Rain shouldn't have to educate her. But Emily or Aiken shouldn't have to either. Technically, it's Kellen's job to educate herself. But if she hasn't done it by now, you can probably imagine that's not going to change any time soon. The next best thing would be for Rain to explain things to Kellen herself. Not because it's Rain's responsibility (it's not), but because she WANTS Kellen to understand. She doesn't have to do anything, but doing nothing may result in losing any sense of relationship with her big sister.

Learning by teaching is a common way for humans to confirm new things they learn. I think this is what Aiken is doing here and it is a very good sign. It shows that he is not just trying, but have actually accepted Rain for who she is.
I still believe Kellen will get it eventually. She just isn't there yet. I'm happy that Rain have so many allies, she does not have to take every fight for herself. But I agree that in this case Kellen should probably talk directly to Rain too, not just to her friends.

Love this comic!
