Rain Delay: goofy little gag comics to keep you entertained while I work on the legit stuff. Remember, Chapter 26 begins next Wednesday, July 15th. ^_^
Today's installments revolve moreso around Chapter 23 and 24 scenes. I didn't do any Delays during that time, but I figured it'd still be okay to include them. Better late than never, right?
Watashi wa Emily desu
Unlike Rain and a lot of her other friends, Emily's SO not a geek. But for some reason, the thought of Emily turning out to actually be closet hardcore weeaboo when put in the right setting cracked me up.
Just as strange as fiction
The joke with any "Ryan: The Totally Normal Guy" skit is basically always the same. Take a scene that was complicated and dramatic and dealt with the difficulties of being trans, and show how they become total non-issues when the magic of cis privilege is involved. This situation actually ended up being resolved fairly easily in canon. And yet I couldn't help but look at the scene again and think it would probably be no less complicated for a cis guy. Maybe it'd be even more complicated. Two teenage girls sharing a room and bed? Socially, that'd just be seen as a sleepover. A teenage boy and girl sharing a room and bed? Indecent!! That's raging hormones waiting to wreak havoc! I know and you know there are counter points revolving around the teenagers' orientations, but I'm just talking about how the average cis het non-ally person might see it... which is to say, they'd still think it was awkward. In the end, it's still kinda social commentary.
Also, short-hair Rain won't have hair like Ryan. Just in case anyone was wondering. ;P

I do like Ryan's hair though, it wouldn't be feminine enough for Rain. A cute pixie cut may fit Rain, if she were more comfortable in her own skin. So while I think that her sister cutting Rain's hair was the jerkiest thing in the world, I also think that Rain's friends could help her turn it into something that helps her confidence in the long run. I'm not sure if that will happen, but it does help console me in the fact that Rain's jerky older sister cut her hair, which is a big part of any girl's identity.
For the longest time I've been considering cutting my own hair, but have decided not to because 1. I am incredibly vain about my hair and 2. After having long hair for most of my life, it's a part of my identity and how I see myself. I don't think Kellen understands how much her actions have and will continue to hurt Rain. At this point I think that even Aiken will be furious at her. But that also could just be me wanting Aiken to be a supporter of Rain because he's a very realistic character. (So I do hope that this terrible thing will end up being something to help Rain in the long run).
What fun! More Rain Delay! Love how Emily was made to be all into the Japaness culture and not into anime or manga.
I...I really hope Emily doesn't turn out to be a weeaboo...I would cry.
@haxorus29: B-but, pocky is kawaii desu, HAXORUS29-san!
@katy the dragon: No...you fell to the weeaboo influence...is nowhere safe?!
something about weeb!Emily is simultaneously hilarious and really creepy
Hey aiken, you better check your privileges!!
This week has seemed so much longer and boring with out Rain updating. x.x
@LittleLynn84: How long might it take for volume 1 and 2 to be shipped to Michigan? I tend to be really impatient...
re the "Adventures of Ryan" strip: That's kind of a straw man. It would be unusual for a cis teenage boy to be allowed to share a bed with a female friend while visiting family. But it wouldn't be unusual at all for a cis teenage *girl*. Cissexism for a trans girl is being gendered male, so of course in this scenario it wouldn't have gone differently if she was a cis boy
For some reason, I really love 'THE ADVENTURES OF RYAN THE TOTALLY NORMAL GUY'. It always makes me laugh! Usually Rain LGBT is more interesting than funny, but somehow The Adventures of Ryan is always on the funnier side. love u Jocelyn
I woke this morning at 5... pm, and started looking for... something, dont even remember what anymore. It is now 3am and I have finished all 600+ pages of this! Ive never been big on manga or webcomics but I loved this! I dont know what describes me, but I feel like I am a cross between Rain and Gavin. I dont totally feel comfortable as a male, but I wouldnt go so far as to change my physical appearance, but I also cant but feel "I want boobies!!!". As far as being like Gavin, my thought process is kind of like his.
Anyway thanks for this! It has helped me learn more about this part of the world and helped me shape my opinion on gay people. Ill admit, if you asked me this morning what I thought of gay people, I would definitely say that I dont support it think it is wierd. After reading this I can definitely say my opinion has changed. I still think it is weird, but I would never discriminate someone because of it. I wouldnt have before either, but seeing the way people in this story think about genders, I can understand it more.
Anyway, the reason for the title "needing more" is because Id like to know if there are anymore stories similar to "Rain". I started Houro Mesuko (Wandering Son), but it is really slow paced and no comedy in it so far (episode 1 so far lol). I need more of this. I loved the transgender character of Stiens:Gate (name eludes me), and i have had a huge interest in animes like Ore Twintails Ni Narumasi and Kampfer (MCs turn into females, though only temporary. They also do it for comedic purposes buy I dont mind).
Anyway, a wall of text from someone wgo didnt even bother making an account :/ maybe make one later. Looking forward to the next one!
One more thing, think you can look into an artist? Your artwork is great with original styles to clothing and such, but it does look like it was made in paint. Sorry if this is rude, but it would be realky neat to get some higher quality imaging :D also if this got an anime adaptation I would be in heaven :D keep up the good work!
is a fan of rain because like cathy guisewhite, i believe jocelyn taught herself to write and draw. i like jocelyn's unique style.
I just noticed Ryan's shirt changes from the first/commentary panel to the rest of the strip of him with Emily.
Also, it'd be interesting to see a gag strip pairing Ryan, the totally normal guy with Rain. Maybee there's two sets of Flaherty twins, instead of one :)
