Oooooh! Kellen said a bad woooord!
Well... for once, she's not wrong... XD

Although I wouldn't go so far as to say this redeems Kellen or anything, it IS pretty satisfying to see Chase sweat like that. I mean, that does confirm Emily's pregnancy status to him, while rendering him unable to contact her without going through his other exes. The guy's kinda screwed at the moment, but it's hard to feel bad for him. XD

By the by, I made an interesting little mistake that I'm surprised nobody caught (or nobody called me out on, at least). Through this whole arc with Rain and Emily visiting Aiken and Kellen, I'd completely forgotten about something. It turns out that Chase actually namedropped Emily to Aiken at one point, and that's never occurred to me (or Aiken) through this trip. Now, one could posit that he might very easily forget about that. At the time, it was a heated moment where Aiken was focused on a lot of other things besides a random common name he couldn't put a face to. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

But because of this revelation, I actually changed the art here. The script is identical, but originally, I was going to just have Aiken walk out of the room. Since rediscovering this old plot point, I decided to keep him in there. After all, memories have a funny way of coming back to people. You can see the gears turning in Aiken's head through this page, even without the dialogue.

But where does THIS bring us, exactly? What will Kellen, Aiken, and/or Chase do with the information they've all just learned in this very brief exchange?

As a final note, this was originally planned to be the last page of the chapter, but I switched the order of some scenes for what I think is a slightly better flow. That means there's just a little more of this chapter. It ends next week, but good news, I don't plan on doing a hiatus this time (maybe next time, but not this time). ^_^

I wonder if Chase's "god damn it" at the end was because he realized why Emily knew Kellen (he met Rain at Emily's party, who is Kellen's sister) or if he still hasn't realized and is mad that Emily got pregnant. Or maybe he's just pissed that Kellen yelled at him.

That's ONE way to get the audience cheering for Kellen in some form or another. (Still doesn't excuse her, naturally, but goes to show she at least has some redeeming qualities.)

@Fairportfan: It's like... "Having sex with a 17 year old when they're nearly legal?! You're a monster! ...But I'm totally OK with assaulting my brother in his sleep to make him look like a boy and get him to stop looking like and calling himself a girl because I don't like it and I don't care about the risks of whether or not he wakes up and starts panicking and I severely hurt him because I was using sharp metal objects on him in his sleep against his will!"

Damn, it was hard to call Rain a he. Please know I'm only calling Rain "he" to make a Kellen-quote. I know people probably understand already I'm just trying to talk like Kellen just for effect, but I feel horrible unless I clarify that I'm talking as Kellen, not me.

Really, though, Kellen needs to sort out her priorities! She's willing to attack her sister, but she's not OK with someone that's barely illegal having sex? THAT is what sets her off? Granted, neither are good, but I think one is a liiiiiiiiiiittle worse than the other. Overall, this just makes me hate Kellen more. I wouldn't even call it a redeeming quality. More like an effed up one.

Strangely, though, I'm starting to like Kellen as an enemy to Rain. It'll allow for some interesting conflicts while we wait for the father to finally make an appearance (let's face it. We know he will. He's been teased and built up so much by now.) Though, upon thinking of the story, there's a lot of it to tie up. Everyone at Rain's school, Emily and Chase, the "Who will end up with Rain in the end", the Rain vs Kellen, Maria and her girlfriend, Emily vs Chase, Rain's dad is coming to the picture eventually, Jessica and Aiken, Jessica and Heather, etc... This is shaping up to be a hell of a story and I can't wait to see what happens.

Don't forget that there's also Rain starting HRT soon, Emily's pregnancy and eventual baby, Maria and Rudy's parental issues, Ky and Drew's very unusual relationship, Father Quenton finally making an appearance where he lives up to his nickname, Ruby's return, Ana's return, prom, graduation, Summer, "who will everyone besides Rain end up with in the end", and at least one more pride demographic that I want to cover. ^_^

I like layered, intertwining stories. You know, in case you couldn't already tell. XD

Jesus! You have a LOT of ground to cover, haha! When reading it over, though, I realize that, while it seems like a lot on paper, it'll fly by fast in actual submission speed D: Ah well! All the more reason to savor every moment! I cannot wait to see how it all unfolds! It is absolutely fantastic! My 2nd most, if not most, favorite webcomic ever. And seeing how much I love that other webcomic, TwoKinds, that's saying something... Also, yay for possibly inappropriate namedropping! XD

I can't help but wonder what minority you didn't use yet... I keep thinking "What else is in the LGBT+ community not already represented here?" but the answer escapes my mind. LGBTQIAPgf (gf = genderfluid) are all covered... I'd guess crossdressers that don't care if they pass or not? But that doesn't make too much sense, since that's similar to Ky, aside from the fact she wants to pass and it's not just clothing. I keep going back to bi, but then remember Fara and, possibly, Jessica (is she bi?) and... Mmmf. I'm probably gonna facepalm when what it is is revealed.

As for Quenton? FINALLY!!! Finally we get to see him pose a threat!

"I've been looking forward to this" - Count Dooku

"I like layered, intertwining stories. You know, in case you couldn't already tell. XD"

So do I! It always ends where, when the last piece of the puzzle is put in place, everything that happened all makes sense.

"Think about it. Imagine your favorite TV show. You've been through it all. The ups, the downs, the crazy coincidences, and then: BANG! They tell you what it's all about. Would you be happy? Does it make sense? How come it all ended in a church?" - Joker, 2011 (Arkham City)

"You said Emily and Chase twice. :P"

*Faceplants, YuGiOh anime style*

"I keep going back to bi, but then remember Fara and, possibly, Jessica"
Fara, Kylie, and Randy (even though he's not really relevant to the plot) are all bisexual. There's one other character I'm humming and hawing over whether they should be bi or not too, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. Jessica however, would still call herself straight regardless of recent events. She'd surely blame the wine. XD

I also said that it isn't too surprising that he didn't make the connection before this - he was rather distracted by the end of that particular conversation, and probably forgot all but the most relevant fact.

@Anon: It doesn't make a lot of sense to a lot of Americans either.

But if there are going to be lines one shouldn't cross, someone needs to draw the lines SOMEWHERE, and no matter where or how they are drawn there's a good chance that a situation will occur that makes the lines look stupid.

Still, in most states there's at least some attempt at finesse in the law. Such as saying that if a couple of kids are within two years of the same age, then there's no *legal* issue with them having consensual sex.

Although there are still some complications, sometimes due to changing technology. Why is publishing child pornography illegal? If someone text-messages a photo of a 15-year-old girl's naked breasts, is that publishing child pornography? (Legally, in most places, it is.) Should it be a crime for the girl to text-message a photo of her own breasts to her boyfriend? Then if she dumps him and he angrily forwards the photo to the entire class, is *that* publishing child pornography? (One guess.) Do - and should - these actions qualify as felony sex offenses that get the person legally branded for life?

@Don Edwards: Children should not be tried as adults under any circumstance, in my opinion.

But look, I'm sorry--forwarding nude photos of someone that trusted you with them is revenge porn and is despicable. That alone has the potential of ruining that girl's life, and it should be met with some kind of legal action.

It's not my opinion that a CHILD should be slapped with a felony for it, but if you're an adult? Well, yes. You do something to ruin someone elses life, guess what--yours gets ruined, too.

@Anon:

Only from a purely legal standpoint (and even if you're over 18 and the person you're having (consensual!)sex with is under 18, in many jurisdictions, there are Romeo and Juliet laws that keep the person over 18 from being a sex offender if the gap is 4 years or less).

In actual social interactions, people more or less follow the (generally) unspoken half-your-age-plus-7-rule. Under which, Chase is still pretty disgusting. He's 29. Half his age is 14.5. Plus 7 is 21.5. Lets call it 21/22. That's still about half a decade older than Emily.

In the interest of fairness, even Fara and Heather's late-night-drunken-make-out is a little creepy by this rule. Fara's 36. Heather's 22. Half Fara's age is 18, plus 7 is 25. Granted, the gap is less blatant, but still.

@Grenartia: Not to mention that Emily does not have a fully developed frontal lobe yet whereas he does. She literally was not capable of giving informed consent because that part of her brain isn't developed. Chase, on the other hand, is fully conscious of his actions and has the understanding of cause and effect that makes his very responsible for what he did.

....of course, people probably already know all of this but I still can't resist ranting about it XD

reply

@Lenn: Actually, I'd argue that if you're old enough to be allowed to drive a car (about 16, for most jurisdictions), you're old enough to give informed consent (which aligns up neatly with the age of consent being 16 in most states). Still doesn't make a 29 year old having sex with a 17 year old any less creepy or wrong, but on paper, Emily should be fully capable of understanding the process and consequences of sex as well as your average adult.

Oh, about gender ans sexuality not covered? Well, there's this infinite plain of gender identities, behaviors, and expressions that can never be filled completely ^_^ Same with sexuality.
