I really don't like this page. I know where I wanted to go with it, but no matter how many times I reread it, I worry I'm not conveying it well. I was still tweaking the dialogue on this one as recently as ten minutes ago. I'm sure I'll find out soon enough how I did though. I imagine this one will elicit a lot of varied responses either way, so I'll just let you take it from here.
Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.
Er-hem. I hope this doesn't detract from story-related comments, but as you may or may not have heard, I've got an appointment for SRS consultation scheduled for the end of the month. Maybe - just maybe - something good will be in my future. This also means your help was never more welcome if you're willing and/or able. Buying books, or shirts, or scarves/wristbands, or just plain donations are all very helpful right now. Obviously, if you are unable to or don't want to offer anything, that's totally fine. There are other ways you can help. Like voting for Rain on TopWebComics or joining/sharing the Facebook page can help spread the word about my work. Thanks for anything you can do; no hard feelings if you can't. ^_^
I have deleted a certain conversation that got way out of hand and became hostile. People are allowed to comment and have opinions and discussions, but if I see fighting and shade being thrown around, I'm not going to be happy. There's enough hostility everywhere else on the internet, that I'd kinda like my comic about camaraderie and acceptance to be kind of a safe place for people to express themselves.
Thanks for understanding, everyone.
Aww Gavin needs a hug. Don't worry Gavin Ruby will help! (Yes I'm still shipping Gavin and Ruby don't judge me.)
Lynn, this is one page of a scene that legitimately doesn't fit on one page - it needs two, maybe more. There's just so much going on (granted that it's largely inside Gavin's head).
So there's no way this page can both be good and feel like it's complete.
I'm glad you chose to go for good. Finish the scene in the same manner, okay?
Oh, that was mean.
And if it wasn't intentional ... i'm not sure WHAT it was.
I personally follow Gavin's thought process. It makes sense, and seems to fit to me. It was nice to understand what was going on with him more than before.
"But I had a much better idea of how to respond to it" - very interesting. I really want to know what is going on in Gavin's mind right now. I'm glad we got some insight in Gavin's feelings about Rain's haircut, but regardless, he is obviously much more preoccupied with this.
I hope we'll see someone get more out of him Friday :3
@LittleLynn84: Lots to say in just few scenes. It got things across and understood better. I think that is the most I ever saw him say at one time. Hope to see more of cute Ruby. :P
Personally, I'm disliking Gavin right now. Having been on both sides of the same coin, in shoes similar to Rain's and shoes similar to Gavin's, I really do think Gavin is being a jerk to Rain. No, he shouldn't have to make everything about Rain 24/7 but even still he should be there for her during this. He's supposed to be her best friend, right?
@TallMist: I think he wants to be there for her, but he doesn't know what to say and is afraid of messing things up.
In my opinion I like Gavin. His name sounds like a Transform Robot form my youth for one. No one liked Rudy at first either and there was much hate on him. Then we got Ruby and everyone loved the cute Ruby. What does it take for him... to put on a dress and press wild flowers to be liked here? LOL :P
@Anna Rei: Looking at all the other comments, I appear to be the only one that has this opinion, so... Yeah. Lol. I don't think he needs to put on a dress since he's already very liked even now. You do make a fair point about Rudy/Ruby, but... Let's not forget, the same is the case for Gavin, is it not? Gavin was hated for doing nearly the same thing at the beginning of the comic. Yet, now, it causes no hate for him. Yet when Rudy was hated for the second time, he was REALLY hated. Granted, it wasn't exactly for the same reasons, but... still...he was REALLY hated. And what for? For seeing Rain as a guy or thinking he sees her as a guy or... I can't exactly recall it, so someone will have to refresh my memory because I'm far too lazy to go back that far lol. But yeah, it's very odd that he's really liked here and actually somehow understood here despite making nearly the same mistake, but just a few chapters ago, Rudy was absolutely hated and what he did wasn't the same as his first mistake.
Perhaps you could give me some insight as to why that may be? Or your own personal thoughts on the matter? Because I AM genuinely curious as to why this flies, but it didn't before. Maybe it's because he is busy with more things than Rain whereas he wasn't really busy at all back at the start but still, that's still very iffy to me.
P.S. I hope this doesn't come off as argumenative (is that spelled correctly?), because I'm really trying to just try to have a nice discussion after... well, you know.
Edit: Again, WOW. That was longer than I thought it was, jeeze... I guess that's my superpower. Longwinded comments in the middle of the night. XD
@TallMist: No I like it and it was very fair. :)
@Anna Rei: Thank you. :)
@TallMist: See we can get along YAAAA! LOL
@Anna Rei: Oh, please. I get along with no one. XD
@TallMist: So I changed tactics and went for more love. But I am still not forgetting the rest you said in message you sent me. It is just not worth it to me to fight anymore. I made my point. :)
@TallMist: the only characters I ever hated were Kellen, Chase and Maria/Rudy's parents. And even the latter are so ridiculous in their bigotry that they sometimes inspire more laughter than hate.
I think Rudy should learn to think before he acts, but that's something he will probably learn over time. I know some people who were like him at his age and then grew out of it. (By 'like him' I mean doing stupid things because they just felt like it). So, no, I don't hate him and never have. Never hated Gavin either, in fact I like him a lot. He may not be the best at dealing with his emotions, but like Rudy, he's young and those are things you learn over time.
@GabiAPF: To be fair, I think Maria and Rudy's parents aren't really people so much as plot devices/punchlines. We've never seen them act like normal human beings, and I doubt we ever will; their role is to be a motivating force for Maria and Rudy and that's it. They represent the hostile relatives many of us have to deal with, but they're not representative of those people; we already have Kellen for that.
@GabiAPF: I'm sure you've read all my posts here, so I'm sure you'll see I said my opinion is the unpopular one so I never claimed anyone else hated Gavin.
Man, Gavin's in a tough spot. He's pretty much damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. Ignoring/avoiding Rain is hurting her feelings and making her overthink things and question things she shouldn't have to focus on right now. But if Gavin is really that concerned about saying something hurtful/offensive for the sake of honesty, he probably has good reason for it, and Rain doesn't need that right now, either!
I think his response is realistic and well-written, especially given the ages of the characters. It's easy for me, as an adult with an ever-sharpening awareness of social issues, to be like, "Man, he should just tell her she doesn't need to 'pass' for him to respect her and use the desired name/pronouns! He should tell her 'passing' is nonsense and she doesn't need to try and 'pass' for what she is anymore than he has to 'pass' for a guy!"
But I've had over a decade now to mull over the attitudes and messages that surrounded me in high school, and I did not and do not live in an area where the consequences of openness were more severe than bullying from other students. My high school even [grudgingly] accepted students participating in the Day of Silence, despite being in the rural south.
I grew up with a certain amount of exposure and education privileges that none of the young characters in this comic have had. Given what we know of Rain's parents, sometimes I'm puzzled how Fara turned out so liberal. XD
But yeah, in general I feel it's unfair for me, as an educated, experienced adult, to hold repressed and oppressed teenagers to the same standards I hold myself to. So I can't be mad at Gavin. I just feel sad for him and for Rain. I reserve my anger for Kellen, for putting them IN this situation! :/
/end long post, lol...
I think it is just hard on Gavin. He is not gay but his father is. Now he is experiencing attract the some one he thought was a male friend. He is cis-male that as problems with someone changing there gender identity and then he feels attracted to them. I have found I always have these problems with males. I just can not hate them for being what they are. I have had many males attracted to me not understanding I was not male mentally and party in body as well and they felt confused. I wish they had been as nice as him about it. I got very bad reactions and beat up for it for no reason other then they felt wrong about feeling that way about me. I did nothing wrong. But they thought I hurt them some how. I think he does not want to give up his friendship with Rain as it was before to. Now Ana as stepped in and got his attention and he as been dealing with her now. Gavin just needs time and he as a herd now he mite of did some thing wrong by Rain and he seems like he plans to do some thing about it now.
