I came so close to cutting the first page so many times. It went from feeling unnecessary one day to absolutely vital the next. Mostly, it's there because the second page felt clunky without it, even though they're not that connected. Hopefully, I made the right choice by leaving it in. Of course, there's a bit of development for both Jessica and Heather here. So that's a plus.

And at last we see Jessica and Aiken in each other's presence. Albeit with Heather in the middle. This could either go really well or really badly (or really neutral?). Place your bets, kids. XD

Re: page 1, panel 2+3. Been there done that, at an even older age. Still not sure if those folks who 'always knew' were telling the whole truth about themselves, but for me things worked out okay even though I didn't. So, if any of you kids are in that phase, no need to worry about that, okay? ^_^

Looking forward to the rest of this week's pages. I hope Jessica and Aiken can make up, even though it won't be easy.

THANK YOU for the first page!

It's always reassuring to hear others like that. I was EXACTLY the same way Jess was! At about the same age, too!

Timing and Triangles

reply

I really love Aiken, but the man has terrible timing!!!

I know the description of Rain says "copious love triangles" and all, but you're really highlighting that in this chapter, aren't you, Jocelyn? We've got Rain/Emily/Maria(/Chanel) and now Heather/Jessica/Aiken. And I have a feeling Ana/Gavin/our new friend Allison is going to be played up as well, sooner or later.

Great update as always!!!

Ahw, Heather needs a partner :c

Also, you're describing Ky's period in a way similar to how you describe backstories that have only been shown in the books :p Reading her experiences like this is really interesting, though..

Also, Aiken! ^u^

well i hope aiken has plot armor.. cause umm.. shit is about to hit the fan... and also @00Stevo.. shes kinda intersex witch means she has ambiguis genetalia.. or a not fully formed sex organ inthis case a vaginia.. hetyhers quite rare tho as this doesnt really go unnoted by doctors and /usually/ corrected but in some cases.. thats not an option.. in that aspect i feel sorry for heather.. but if you are looking for where she sorta outed herself look around in the chaptor where they introduce chanels lab partner.... or the chaptor after.. { somewhere in there} but if i was jessica ild do something diabolical... to aikens coffie like jip him on the coffie quantiy or froth... or make it alttle not to his likeing just to mess with him.. but if he apogises.. ild forgive him but ild still make him you know.. work for my trust again..

What intersex is

reply

@pansexualangel:

Intersex may or may not involve ambiguous genitalia. Intersex includes a lot of different conditions. Intersex people suffer from enough misconceptions without us adding to them.

In Heather's case, it's CAIS (Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome), which, according to Wikipedia, generally (but not always) results in normal-appearing female genitalia. From Heather's comment about a testicle being removed, my guess is that she had what they call an "inguinal hernia."

@Asche: I am one of the many forms of Intersexed. I was born a normal male at first but at puberty I grew breasts and hips like a girl and acted very female. Though I was very big and tall for even a boy my age. I am a mix and adapting to living as trans-women now again. I float between being male and female in personality at times mostly in the female. Maybe gender fluid as well. Still not completely sure on that.

I will cast my vote for some forgiveness for Aiken. But only because he's made a big effort to understand Rain. If he'd continued being a prick, I'd say kick him out. But yeah, he has some hard work ahead of him, gaining Jessica's trust again.

And I loved the first page Jocelyn! I love these pages that expand and explain the backgrounds of your characters. I love the depth they add. So, yeah, keep them coming. ;)

page 1, last two panels

reply

I don't quite understand Page 1 in the last two panels. Heather was raised as a girl and she is 6 yrs older than Ky. How would an 17-19 year old woman not know about a period? You cover that in health class. She may have not experienced it herself, but Heather would have seen all of the girls around her go through that change.

I agree with everyone, Jocelyn, the background pages really flush out the characters. They also inform people about different conditions and in general terms explain what that condition means. I have included this comic in the information packet i gave to people when i was coming out.

@Vicky_michelle:

This might not be the best comparison as I wasn't raised female, but until I was 18, I thought periods were literally just cramps and nothing else. I knew of pads and tampons, but I didn't know what they were for. I had mostly female friends though, and while they might talk about it, it was mostly at school so they never went into much detail. And I never asked because I was embarrassed.

In a way, I figure Heather probably went through something like that. While raised female, her mother knew she wasn't going to have any periods so she never felt the need to teach her about it. And then if Heather's friends talked about it, she'd just play along like she knew exactly what they were talking about, too embarrassed to ask for more detail.

Presumably, neither Heather or I had very good health classes. XD

@LittleLynn84: I went thru much the same thing with my younger sister. I was the one who she first came to and she set all day crying on my shoulder as I hugged her. It was a bad day for her. I did not understand or know what to do. She was the first to know I was mentally female. We were like sisters. The females in my family have it bad some times. Her first was very much so. I only know a bit cause of her about how it can be. I was lucky I never had them but I would of no problem to be fully a female in body.

Hey Lynn, thank you for keeping the first few panels in the comic. I really do identify with what Jessica said? I didn't start wondering about if I was trans until roughly the same age at 16, and I'm only 21 and still trying to figure things out. I still don't know, but thank you so much for having a character with that same doubt because gosh I wish I could have the confidence and bravery to do what she's done.

Anywho, sorry, thank you. This comic has done a lot in helping me figure out who I am and be comfortable with that and it really is wonderful to see the representation and ya. Thanks.

Message Board

reply

Huh. I also figured out a lot of being trans on a message board. Technically it was a subreddit (following my positive experiences with /r/ADHD in high school), but it's a social media site with about the same applications.

Of course, most of the people there were actually the same age as or older than me, and they also often had stories about not having even considered the possibility of being trans until recently in their lives (plus people noting that it works out better to transition before I develop a lot of life commitments), so despite learning later in my life than Jessica I ended up transitioning earlier, lol.
