Kind of a rough situation, actually. I myself have somewhat mixed feelings. Like, in a way, I feel for Drew. Back in my high school days, before I accepted myself or came out to anyone, I too, would've vehemently denied being exactly what I am. If you're still questioning, or just aren't ready to come out, I don't think it's unreasonable to try and cover it up. Especially in a situation like this. Maybe Holly on her own is harmless, but she is gossipy. Devon meanwhile, can be a little hard to read; Drew had no reason to think he'd be willing to ignore the whole thing (I wouldn't exactly call it acceptance though). And if you're not 100% sure, letting someone in on your secret when you see them everyday can be a little risky. After all, that kind of disclosure has blown up in Drew's face before...

BUT!

Let me make it clear that what Drew just did here is still completely wrong, and that Ky is well within his right to be upset. Not only did he compromise Ky's right to come out on his own terms (if he wanted to), by outing him to save his own behind. Drew also trivialized what Ky does, by calling it something he "likes to do". I mean, Drew is new to a lot of these concepts, and Ky isn't always the best at expressing himself, but they've talked about this before.

So yeah, this is a pretty crappy situation for both of them. But where do things go from here? Would Ky forgive Drew? Will Devon and Holly actually keep this to themselves? What are your feelings coming out of this page?

Ky X Drew

reply

Part of me understands Drew reacting the way he did considering how much bis friends have been teasing him, but I also can't help but be mad at him for doing that to Ky. I still ship Ky X Drew 100% so as long as he offers a sincere apology and makes it up to Ky, I'll be happy!

Edit: I just realized I said exactly what Jocelyn said. Probably should have read the blurb before hand.

I know what Drew did was on pure reaction and impulse, but... That's... Nope, sorry, Drew, but nope. You just outed someone without their permission in front of them. Nope. That's a whole lot of nope.

@TallMist: It's simply awful that he said that. I can understand why he did, but that doesn't help him whatsoever. The only way he can redeem himself from this is if he gives a sincere apology to Ky, and then Ky accepts. Otherwise, good luck winning your likability back.

I'm really split here. I know from prior history that (with the sole exceptions of Chase, Father Quentin, Kellen, and Rain's dad), terrible people eventually come around. And what Drew did was terrible, but he'll probably come around.

But on the other hand, Ky would totally be within his rights to not talk to him again (and he certainly has the ability to). I honestly don't know how to feel here.

Woah, Devon is the kindest person in the entire comic 0.o This is weird, but I like it.

Ahem, anyway, I hope Drew will be able to fix this, though even if he can't, at least I'm sure he'll be a much better person from now on...

Have I mentioned I have trouble reading the sixth panel without looking away? I hate reading people saying stupid stuff :s

wrong is overrated

reply

Honesltly that's just so easy and unfair to juge someone. Ruby is making fun of transgender by crossdressing without thinking... Drew is a bad boy telling secrets without thinking... X was mean when Y came out... it sounds just like "how crazy is his person that just was born whith a boy's body and acts like a girl ?" or "i know the true god, everyone thinking otherwise is stupid". I guess you can't know how everyone is feeling about every situation, what's important, what will hurt them and why.

Looking like a girl and feeling like one doesn't mean i wouldn't be upset if everyone decided to give me pink ribbons for my birthday. That's even more difficult to know what to say about people you spend time with. Should I say it's a girl sould I say it's a boy (my girl-boyfriend)? to who? should i even say that i met her somewhere (Gavin-Allison-Rain)? Should i stop talking about her like it's definitly not a normal person. Wouldn't she look a bad person because i talked to them about him but now she's her and never said it's both so she won't come and they don't know why ... well whatever it's complicated and impossible to find out yourself.
I think there is nothing more to do than run after KY, say that he saw he hurt him badly and is very sorry about that. If he doesn't understand why though he may even have to ask about it. Ky doesn't really acts like it's a secret with his sister outing him everytime and (s)he even met Drew in the street half boy-girl.
They will have to find out between themselves if Drew's reaction is tactless, wrong or really wrong, I can't tell.

Also, I'm pretty sure Drew's actions here are wrong, at LEAST. You never out someone without their permission. EVER. NOT okay. Also, you read the page where Ky's sister outed him to Fara, right? He was NOT happy about being outed without permission at all.

ky is really chill in general, so i can totally imagine him fuming for a while and then doing what Fairportfan said above xD

and as much as i like the ky/drew relationship, outing someone without permission is a really shit thing to do, especially to save your own hide from "looking gay"

as someone with a LONG history of forgiving people who don't deserve it, trying to "fix" people who are in all honesty huge assholes, and a myriad of other codependent nonsense, i just hope ky knows where to draw the line. i'd hate to see him fall into the same trap when we really aren't sure if drew deserves the patience right now.

While I do understand that one can panic in a situation like this, Drew pretty much fucked up here. It's one thing to deny who or what you are because you are not ready to come out to others (been there, done that) but it's an entirely different thing to out someone else for this reason and (to top it off) playing it down like he does with Ky, because this is a matter of caring about the person in question. If his own social standing is more important to him than Ky's feelings... well, he deserves whatever is coming his way. It might help him sort out his priorities. I really hope Ky chews him out good.
And while I hope they will be able to make up and that Drew will grow from this, I would totaly understand if Ky wouldn't trust him anymore...

Okay ... first off: Drew, when someone is aiming a gun at you, you duck - you don't grab your buddy and pull him in front of you! You're uncomfortable about this, say, your friends, don't throw Ky under the bus. Also, simply yanking your hand away like Drew did was pretty cold too.

Though, as others have said, we can probably understand Drew's feeling of panic. If he is gay, he may not want to be outed himself. Although, he's already mentioned the possibility to others. But that moment of panic is not the time to out someone else to save yourself. It's like the idea of "buddy-knifing" your dive partner (when the shark comes around you cut your friend so the shark goes after them). I haven't been "outed" about anything like this, but I recognize the feelings.

Speaking of which. I don't want to sound too stupid (well, no more than usual); but having never met a gender-fluid person such as Ky, I do wonder what pronouns one would use in speaking/discussing the situation. Since Ky is in "boy mode" (I believe that was Ky's term?) would one refer to Ky as "he", then use "she" when in "girl mode"? Or, would it be better to use gender neutral words such as "they"?

No Drew! NO!

reply

Oh man...this comic brought all those times back to me...

I've had the same on four occasions. All bar one (Which was still at a table in a full family restaurant) relating to hen and stag dos where people have decided to loudly announce or tell other people that I'm Bi. (Pan's probably more fitting but I'm not the one announcing it.)

So I can understand why Ky's annoyed...The difference is I liked that Devon and Holly pointed out it was an assholish thing to do.

Drew might be able to grow from this... and I really really hope he does. (No one was on hand who was be able to comprehend why I was upset that complete strangers who didn't even know my name now knew my sexuality...kinda.)

I really like how Devon reacted. What Drew did was a jerky, and he was a total buttface to Ky, but Devon and Holly's reactions really balanced this page out nicely. They were really sweet, and this makes me like them way better as a couple and as characters in this comic.
