So, I'm trying to work out a cover design for Volume 4. I think Chapter 24's convention setting is probably the best choice for that. It's fun. It pops. And despite my prior thoughts that I might stop doing "selfie covers" from here on, it opens up the opportunity for a unique sort not yet seen on the others. That being, a selfie with someone else. Or other characters in general.
The focal point is of course Rain and Emily in the foreground. But being a crowded convention, I figured other characters in the background might not be a bad idea. The actual cover, I imagine, could have a lot of random folks (shoutouts to other works perhaps?), but I decided to include Aiken, Kellen, and a Kaminari cosplayer in particular for relevance sake. Even though their role is minuscule, I'm also considering Drew, Rob, and Randy, if perhaps obscured or with their backs turned.
For the sake of avoiding spoilers for the very select handful of people who don't read the comic online, I also chose Chapter 24's setting as it is pre-haircut (it's SO weird drawing her like that now). Likewise, I have Emily holding a certain fancomic she takes interest in over her belly for potential readers just seeing the book covers before reading the comic at all.
Anyway, this is again just a very rough idea and is definitely subject to change (even if it more or less takes this design, I'll probably redraw it to look nicer as it is the cover). But I thought I'd post it, to see if anyone had any input, good or bad. So let me know what you think. :)
Ahh I was having a bad day but this made me happy. Rain and Emily are so sweet <3 Lovely rough draft!
@Guest: Your not the only one as my mother decided to go crazy and say she wants to kill herself and end up going to the ER to get evaluated only get right back out and home a few hours later. Just after we got our new furnace put in so we have heat again and I go back to bed finally to take a nap cause I had little sleep and was up early. In the morning at 8am and I usually sleep in tell noon. Then I saw this and I was happy again. What a Roller Coaster Ride today as been. I hate Roller Coaster rides cause my life always is one. Give me Bumper Cars I like to crash into things. LOL :P
@Anna Rei: Oh geez your day was worse than mine... :P I'm sorry. Is your mom doing okay?
@Guest: Yeah she is doing better. She slips in and out of dementia. But my hip as been hurting me badly lately. I set up a "Go Found" me page for her and me to help as I am transgender needing money for transitioning and for help out with her. As I have her on top of all my transgender problems. https://www.gofundme.com/68zqypmc
A rough draft? That's new. I like it, though :p I'm curious to see how the cover itself will look compared to this.
Somewhat unrelatedly, I wrote a way too positive review on my blog about Rain. It's kinda boring because this is one of my favorite webcomics (so it's hard to say anything really interesting about it), but I thought you might like seeing it.
It looks SOOOOO good. I Love It!
I feel like there should be a few other random people in the background or a booth maybe. But since this is a rough draft (and I'm not drawing this), I'll leave my comments at that.
Well, other than saying that it is ADORABLE! SQUEEEEEE! I love it SO MUCH!! \(^.^)/
Um this may sound dumb but I hope not to dumb but is there a place to buy graphic novels of this I love the web comic so much. I just would like to find a way to one help support as well as have physical copies of this comic as well.
@v ^-^: Yosh - I actually had to search for a bit to find it: http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/LittleLynn84
Thank you Maple those comics will be mine and I have saved the location so that i can buy future ones too. I love this comic
@v ^-^: I'm glad I could help! Rain really deserves being on your shelf. The power of webcomics :3
Very cute looking cover, can't wait to see the colored version
As sweet as the last page was, I can't help but think that things are going to go south from here. Rain and Emily have too much to protect in their new relationship, and with their respective rivals Kellen and Chase meeting up recently... Oh my.
My theory is that this story will take a tragic turn, and that Kellen and Chase will set Rain up to look like the "father" of Emily's child. They will both be exposed to their schools, they will both be expelled, and Kellen and Chase will get away with this because any authorities RainXEmily tries to contact will by default listen to Kellen and Chase since they are both older, straight, cisgender, and one of them is male.
Afterwards, Emily will have to live with Rain and Fara as previously suggested, and the two of them will have to rebuild their lives and reputations.
@Maple as they say into every life Rain must fall

Love this cover! (But I admit to being somewhat biased as I pretty much love all your work so far.) As far as more background, as RFZ mentioned a booth might be good, say one of your own favorite comic artists. Or, you could pick several then have your Rain Beaus vote on which one to put in?
Of course, you'd have to be careful. You don't want to make the cover TOO busy. I love your previous covers because they keep the focus on Rain herself. All three of your previous covers had a simplicity in their composition which were very effective. The eye is automatically drawn to Rain and the background has just enough to provide context without visually drawing the viewers attention away from the subject. This sort of composition is something that is difficult for me to achieve in my photography, but you have done beautifully with in your cover art.
All of that having been said. I really do love this cover as is. The Kaminari cosplayer and having Kellen and Aiken in the shot set the stage without detracting from Rain and Emily. In fact, with the way you've put Emily behind and slightly lower than Rain, also is a lovely piece of composition - giving context (Rain and Emily's friendship) while still keeping Rain as the main focus.
Adding too many things to the background risks drawing the focus away from Rain and Emily. Worse, it risks making the scene so visually confusing that Rain and Emily kind of become lost to the eye.
An example would be a photograph of an Iris. If I'm out in the field and want a photo of a single wild Iris, I have to get up close and use a very short depth of field. The more the background is out of focus, the more the single flower stands out. If the background is partially or completely in focus, the single flower gets lost. If I include one or two other things, such as a stump, it sets the context of it being in the forest.
Your covers (everyone can see them here; http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/LittleLynn84 ), are wonderful examples of showcasing the subject, Rain, while having just enough in the background to give us context. I think this cover, or something close to it, really achieves that kind of composition.
OMG ... I really didn't mean to ramble on this much ...
to see a scene from the pre-haircut days- Rain's signature ponytails and Kellen and Aiken standing back to back like that. It's like running into an old childhood friend and suddenly remembering what it was like to spend every day with them.
Personally, looking at it as if I had never read Rain before, this cover definitely would have caught my attention, especially at high school or college age, and it would have been a pleasant surprise to find that it both was and wasn't exactly what I was expecting.
