I'm sure no one will believe me, but the flashback here is slightly adapted from an old scripted page that I somehow never ended up drawing out. I'm not sure what my reasoning for not drawing it back then was, but I'll be sure to fix that when it comes time to work on Volume 5. The inclusion of a flashback here to fill in that lost information may be a little sloppy, but I hope it helps at least a little. Sorry, again. ^^;

As for the current scene, well... :/

The good news is...

Debbie said "live and let live." That means she's not a transphobe. If she wasn't so jealous of Rain for "stealing" her best friend, I doubt she'd have a problem at all. But considering she hates Rain, things could go VERY badly. And then there's Todd looking threatening on the chapter cover...besides asking out Ana, he hasn't shown up. He's going to somehow find out, isn't he? And while Debbie might actually be cool with Rain being trans, so long as she knows she's not the dad of Emily's kid, Todd will absolutely abuse her for it.

@Dawn: Refraining from bigotry until it's personally convenient to engage in it doesn't mean you're not a bigot. If you don't dislike people for being trans, but are willing to out someone who is trans if you dislike them for a different reason you're still a transphobe and you're still dangerous.

Right now that description appears to fit Debbie pretty well.

@Guest: One. You're over reacting. Jocelyn isn't a mindreader, and even if she was, she certainly cannot tiptoe around all of her readers' bad days.

Two. This is life. Shit like this happens all the time. Unfortunately, it can't all be sunshine and rainbows and unicorn farts (to say nothing of the fact that you can't write a good story without tension). Besides, where were you when the plot had Gavin, or Aiken, or even as recently as Kellen, be the antagonist?

reply

@Grenartia: I know right? I totally was stressed and wanted to punch Rains sister when she cut Rain's hair off. Just ugh what sane person does that???? I still think that Emily is going to be a amaing GF and step up to the challenge of defending Rain along with her friends. I think this is all going to work out because comic book land. If it was real life i'd be wayyyy more worried. This is more a mild I despise this character in this moment but looking forward to that sweet shufude when she realises how big the mistake she's about to make is. Besides there was a point where we were not so keen on Emily. Debbie could have a redeeming plot point like Emily did.

@Guest: Sorry you're having a bad day, but have you really not noticed before that Jocelyn very specifically does *not* pull punches with Rain? She never has. Actually tackling issues people face in real life is part of what makes this comic so good. She's real. She doesn't sugar coat things.
And maybe...just maybe...it's more important for an artist to be true to their work than to pander to the desires of *some* of the masses?

@Guest: I think it's kind of disgusting to call someone scum for addressing a very real problem just because it makes you feel bad. Let's just not talk about terrible topics that happen IRL because it makes me feel bad even though not addressing it will probably make it so even less people will be aware of the actual struggle of being trans. Let's not forget that you're potentially shaming someone for wanting to talk about something traumatic that happened to them growing up through their own form of art which is usually therapeutic. But yeah, the world was made for you and if someone's own story makes you sad let's just erase it from existence you egocentric asshole.

@Guest: Bahahaha, sorry but please, it's a webcomic, and if you think Rain is depressing then for your own health, please DO NOT FUCKING READ Wildflower or whatever that one's called. We're what, five volumes into a webcomic mainly about a trans girl and her variously non-straight friends, and as far as we know, nobody in Rain is a self-harmer or suicidal, so as far as stories about LGBT youth go, Rain is pretty easy on the ole heart, ESPECIALLY seeing as Rain is, AFAIK meant to portray a fairly realistic experience. Relax, take a little break from Rain if it's putting you down, it's a fictional story, you're gonna be fine.

Also, calling Jocelyn scum for writing a story you don't like is fucking stupid. Write your own happy go lucky boring-ass webcomic if this one is so depressing. Or better yet, grow up. Sometimes stories have conflict, if this one didn't it would be intolerably boring and few to any people would bother to keep up with it at all. Good luck with your quest to find a halfways decent webcomic that DOES tiptoe around your bad days and delicate sensibilities.

@LittleLeo: Are you serious? Every article I come across that talks about transness either showcases trans guys exclusively or else they outnumber the trans girls they talk about. The National Geographic cover story had more trans guys than girls in the group shot, John Oliver's piece on trans rights spent more time talking about the struggles of trans guys, the articles talking about HB2 and how terrible it is almost exclusively talked about how it affected trans men and so on and so on. I understand WHY the media does this. From their point of view, trans guys are "less scary" and thus easier to advocate for, but it's still a shitty thing to do because they're not the ones all the transphobic bullshit is actually aimed at. And you have the gall to complain about being invisible when all the media does is talk about you?

Raise awareness without being rude to other readers, please. I didn't read LittleLeo's comment as a complaint, but as an observation of how he saw things.

And I would agree with him. Coverage of trans women is a lot more common as far as I've seen. I know of a few trans female celebrities and big names, but can't think of a single trans male one. I could name like twenty webcomics (at least) where the main character is a trans girl, but only one comes to mind with a trans boy lead.

Maybe Leo and I are looking in the wrong places. Maybe you are. Whatever. It's not a contest to see who has it harder, or who has more articles. We should all be having each other's backs, not fighting among each other.

@Guest: I think it's fine - When teenagers talk it isn't always slang language and this way the dialogue is a lot more bearable. The way kids speak to each other is close enough to adult dialogue. and real life dialogue often includes pedantic repeating and so on. OFten speech is altered anyway for the comics becasue what sounds good on paper doesn't in real life as well as the reverse is true.

reply

Guys, Debbie hasn't actually done anything despicable yet. Debbie is actually correct about Rain's previous public identity (male) albeit not particularly enlightened about how to address her (NOT really a boy just biologically a boy). Remember Debbie has come in for some spill over trans-phobia herself when people thought she was a guy in drag on Halloween. Let's hope it taught her to avoid giving pain to others rather than to pass it on. Also, I like Debbie. She is sort of socially clueless, she misses her friend, Emily, who never really gave Debbie a chance to know her and has now pulled away based only on how she "thinks" Debbie will react. We put ourselves in our own boxes, close the lid, then blame others for it.

Yeah, this would happen eventually. Rain hasn't been exactly good at hiding her secret so far. She was lucky not to be outed in many occasions. My guess is that there will be some (maybe major) transphobia to deal with, and a lot of missunderstandings, but Debbie will end up not outing Rain because of her friendship with Emily, and there will be some good healing communication between all the parties involved.

There might be someone eavesdropping tho.
