I know she's only appeared on a handful of pages, but if it's not clear, the bystander walking in is Madison. I considered a few different characters, but I felt it was best that it be someone who didn't really know Rain. Madison might know of Rain (as she's been seen talking to Rudy and Ana on previous pages), but she they haven't ever really met.

This... isn't over, by the way, so whatever you're thinking, there's more.

But for now: Thoooooughts?

You could, maybe, have said that a page or so ago, but when you're a genuinely nice person, it takes a while to build up enough steam.

I on the other hand would have told her to shut the hell up about the second panel she was getting at me.

But then, i never claimed i was genuinely nice person.

@Fairportfan:

It's less that Rain is genuinely nice, and more than she's genuinely shy (not that she isn't also nice). Speaking as a nice, shy person though, I'm not above wanting to tell someone off if they've wronged me, but I do get overwhelmed easily. It's hard for me to fight back and defend myself sometimes.

But then Madison happened to stumble in, and although it wasn't really intentional, she basically diffused the situation. Calling Rain a girl and allowing for a moment of quiet after she left actually helped Rain regain composure a little (although she couldn't look at Debbie while telling her off, or she'd probably cry again).

At least, that's the way I operate. ^^;

I have already said this in the previous page Jocelyn but I think you shouldn't worry about the people who complain and get angry at the comic.

They put themselves in the shoes of the characters and they know exactly how they feel. I couldn't relate to any of the characters in the beginning of the comic but the more the comic progressed, the more started to invest myself in Rain. Yes, I got angry too in the previous page but that's because I know what it's like to be Rain. Sure, it's still a comic and it's not meant to be neither real life nor a fairytale but atleast there are moments where it feels a bit too relatable and that causes people to be hit in the heart.

I don't know but to me, that's actually quite an accomplishment to be able to get emotionally invested in a comic. This is a genuine compliment from me when I say you're doing a really good job.

Here's also a question that's out of the blue but Rain takes place in 2013. Have you ever considered a floating timeline (or atleast a semi one) and it changes depening on the year but have the characters still age?

Debbie, stop trying to make transphobia happen. It's not going to happen.

<3 Rain in this one, about freaking time she isn't just taking it. She stood up for herself and told debbie off. I love rain but her... victimhood, is that the word, frustrates me. She is such a strong person, the only one holding her back is herself. Sometimes I just wish she would drop the mic on people.

Debs

reply

OK, ya'll may not like this, but I see a future for Debbie. Everyone hated Gavin in the beginning, but he calmed down. Besides a minor correlation, I actually can see a reason why. Debs here is only jealous of the attention, and actually cares for Ems, or at least the Ems she knows. Whether she'd be receptive to the new Ems or not is still in the air, but I'm thinking she would be. I could also see her joining the group, and maybe being FTM trans or bi, but I kinda doubt that. I kinda ship her with Holly as well, but that's more of a minor thing.

Any thoughts?

@Ridge: People said the same thing about Rain's sister. And I think they said the same about Todd at first, but I'm not sure.

The idea that every transphobe, homophobe, etc. can be "redeemed" or "realize what they're doing" or whatever just simply isn't realistic. If everyone just started getting along in the comic, then there'd be really nothing to it anymore.

I don't think it's possible for every homophobe/transphobe/etc. to just stop being such. Not in real life, and I don't think Jocelyn plans to do it in her comic either.

@TallMist: I completely understand your point, and I do believe there will be characters who are not. However, I don't believe Debbie, who had a "live and let live" approach to trans people, and Kellen, who is actively trying to understand it, will at least have a chance of redemption. Just because not everyone will be redeemed doesn't mean no one else will.

@Ridge: Well, Debby just threatened, in the latest page, to out Rain to the whole school, which could pretty much ruin her life, at least for a good while. And Kellen chopped off Rain's hair in her sleep against her will, physically assaulting her.

@TallMist: That's only half the story. Debbie doesn't seem trans or homophobic, she is jealous of Rain. She simply thinks she found a tool to use against her. If she met someone else in the LGBT+ community, she'd probably be OK with them. As for Kellen, I think she is beginning to grasp exactly what she did. She did physically assault Rain, and is transphobic, but she is putting an effort into understanding, so there is at least a chance. If you want cited pages showing this, I'll get them.

@Ridge: No need to cite. I know the pages you're talking about. There's no redemption for physically assaulting your sister in her sleep with a sharp and potentially deadly weapon.

As for Debby, you say she doesn't seem transphobic, but then Debby did just pretty much say to Rain's face "YOU'RE A BOY!" and then asked another student if they thought Rain was a boy too. Intentional misgendering of a trans person, regardless of how certain or not, how right or wrong you are, about if they're trans, you're still misgendering a trans person. And pointedly so.

@TallMist: OK, for Kellen, I think you may be going a little over the top. "Assualting her in her sleep with a sharp and potentially deadly weapon" sounds like an attempted murder. It was a HAIRCUT. It was a terrible thing to do, but NOT attempted murder. I still think it's a POSSIBILITY by the end of the series. As for Debbie, 1, it goes against her nature, she has a "live and let live" ideaology, and 2, she says "I didn't believe it myself!". Finally, her motivation here isn't to bully her for being trans, it's to try and get her in trouble as revenge for "stealing" her friend.

@Ridge: A haircut that could've easily killed Rain. Why don't you go ahead and cut your own family member's hair with sharp scissors while they are sleeping, possibly even tossing and turning in their sleep. It's sharp, they're asleep and vulnerable, and regardless of the intent, it's still assault. You mutilate someone (include an against-their-will-haircut while they're not awake and aware of what's going on), that's assault. No, it wasn't attempted murder, but she could've done SERIOUS harm to Rain. Murder or otherwise. There's no two ways about it. You go after someone with a sharp object in their sleep to cut off a piece of their body (hair or otherwise). Go ahead. Try it. See how well that turns out for you. Especially if you KNOW they'd hate you for it after they woke up and saw what happened. Hell, you could even sue for that if you wanted. I bet if that happened and you told the court "It was just a haircut", you'd get off scot-free.

For Debbie, she isn't trying to bully her? She literally threatened to out Rain to the whole school, after clocking her and making her feel like shit. Debbie abandoned Emily (read the next page again if you want to see how), and then had the nerve to blame Rain for it and threaten to out her to the whole school. Regardless of how certain she is or isn't that Rain's a "guy", and regardless of how likely it is for anyone to believe Debbie.

I think we need to not water down and understate what exactly these two are doing with "Well, Debbie said it was okay for men to wear dresses, live and let live, so she's fine." or "Kellen went to see a therapist once. Surely she'll be redeemed after actually attacking her sister in her sleep."

And, again, yes. It was an attack. Intentions be damned, Kellen physically attacked Rain.

Ridge (Guest)

reply

@TallMist: OK, I admit, you have a point. A haircut COULD possibly kill someone. Emphasis on COULD. If Kellen saw danger, she'd stop. Next, look at the motivation. She wasn't trying to hurt Rain, she actually thought she was in the right. I'm not saying what she DID was right, just that she THOUGHT so. She didn't consider the implication of her actions, she only wanted to "fix" her "baby bro". She is ACTIVELY trying to understand and accept it, remember, it's only been a FEW DAYS, and Vincent has a busy schedule, as seen when Jessica had to give up her session for Rain. 1 visit so far makes sense. I'm NOT saying that her actions will be forgotten, or that she and Rain will get a normal relationship instantly. It'll take time, but at least is in the realm of possibility.

As for Debbie, you have to consider motivation. She is NOT trying to bully Rain because she is trans. She is threatening her with the fact she THINKS that she is trans, but not BECAUSE of it. She feels HURT by the fact Emily trusted a person she met only a few months ago (and even considered an enemy) over her, one of her closest friends. She hadn't yet realized she abandoned her, she was too concerned with her own hurt. If she tries to make up the friendship with Emily, she could have a CHANCE at redemption. Look at Gavin and Emily for proof of a chance.

My SO has to deal with that too, he too is like Vincent, father supports him, mother refuses to bring him to appointments and actually tries to hinder it.But I digress..Love the comic will certainly keep an eye out for more.
