I'm not sure why I don't show Emily's mom's face, to be honest. With Rain's dad, I hid his face in shadow for a long time to make him seem scarier. Almost inhuman. And while Emily's mom is also horrible, the same thought process never [consciously] went through my head for her. I think it was just that for a long time, I was trying not to make her a recurring character. And now that I've spent so long not showing Emily's mom, it somehow doesn't feel right to start showing her now. Her immediate presence isn't really the important part of her anyway. Rather, the damaging influence she's had on her daughter is.

As for Chase... well, bear in mind, Emily's birthday isn't until late July. So "just after last year's prom" would make her 16 in this flashback. Although it wasn't her smartest move, we now have a better understanding why Emily went for this. But "dating before the night was over" means Chase was pretty totally on-board with it too. (And I'm not even going into Emily's mother supporting this for now.)

These pages make me so all around uncomfortable. Sorry for anyone else feeling the same. I mean, if I made you uncomfortable too, these pages have kinda done their job (but I'm still gonna feel bad about it). We've still got a few pages left for the chapter though, so as I've been warning, it's gonna get worse before it gets better.

Knowing what it's like for older creeps to look at or talk to you the wrong way, I can relate to Emily's discomfort. It's messed up that her own mom would put her through all that

I know this page is uncomfortable, but it's important to acknowledge that this kind of horrible things happen in order to prevent them and react better. This page looks kind of like a Bojack Horseman episode, and it's understandable how peer pressure and elitism can cause damaging consequences to a person's mind. Also, if I have a daughter and she is been harassed by creeps I will punch them in their faces and break their noses. Same if I have a son or nonbinary kid that is been harassed. Actually, I will punch every creep.

@TranshumanAr:

It's exactly this kind of reaction (punching in the nose) that makes people (esp. women) who have been creeped on or worse not want to tell people, especially the men in their lives.

When you're feeling vulnerable, violence, especially from people who (supposedly) are protecting you, makes you feel even less safe. The harm you have suffered gets forgotten while two dudes try to prove who has the bigger you-know-what.

Ultimately, it's a case of (usually male) people making someone else's sfeeling and experiences all about themselves. It's no longer about what the victim needs, it's about the "protector's" need to feel in control of what happens to the victim.

@Allison:

I understand that white knighting is wrong, and I know women aren't damsels in distress, but can I still punch creeps that become a serious problem?... as a last resort? Problems can be solved peacefully, but some creeps are persistent.

@Allison: I always see violence as a last resort, and have yet to physically assault someone for any sort of slight against another, but I do understand the feeling.

Sometimes it's not even white-knighting so much as just... being really upset about what is happening, wanting it to stop, and not knowing how. Social situations like this are complicated and awkward, but even the dumbest animal knows how to make someone stop talking if they really want to.

Selfish, destructive, counterproductive, yes... but I also end up feeling kinda sad for them too.

Well, we're seeing Emily's memories here... I kind of like the implication that maybe she doesn't see her mom enough to even really remember what she looks like, in detail. Or maybe SHE sees her mom as inhuman and scary.

Man yeah, it does feel super gross him going after her at 16, though what makes me feel really weird is that Emily and Chase have the exact same age gap as my partner and I, though I was 19 when we got together and I'm 22 now. But an adult going after a minor is just so wrong and awful.

Honesty, you continuing to make Emily's mom a shadow is really fitting, because it shows how much Emily 'cares' about her, and how much she influenced Emily. Also, Chase is gross? Someone should have stopped him, seeing that. Kinda shows why the world is getting so dangerous.

I've been following this comic since high school, and I just first want to say thank you for providing me with a wonderful comic to grow into trans-ness with, and that I'm so glad you're back :)

Secondly while it vaguely registered back then "Ew, squick, this man should not be dating a high school senior" I think that it didn't really register in the same way that it does now that I'm a 22 year old adult and find myself going "Oh god." even at the concept of Chase dating her at 18 and then finding out about this is makes it like... Roy Moore level bullshit :/

@Erin: As a side note, it's taken me five years of reading Rain to put together that Chase is one letter off of chaser. Because duh, creepy straight man who hangs out in spaces he shouldn't with bad intentions. Carry on.

Even if it might be hard to tell this story, it’s very convincing. And I guess we’re not (only) here for fluffy bunnies.

Otherwise: Welcome back! I’m looking forward to the further unfolding of the story!
I would be happy with single pages, as long as they keep coming.

Ugh, so uncomfortable and creepy. I know Chase is a pretty terrible person, but I was somehow hoping he fooled Emily and she actually liked him... It's worse knowing she was forcing herself to be with him from the very start, especially with her being pregnant and all.

Poor Emily :( I'm glad she's out of that situation! It must have been so terrible feeling so pressured to be with someone even though she felt gross about it.
