Sorry for the down note for the weekend. Really. ^^;

But let's talk about this for a moment. Mr. Strongwell's threat of conversion therapy has been sitting quietly in the background for some time now. But would he really do it? Is he that insidious? Or do you think Chanel is right and this has got to be some kind of a bluff? That he couldn't possibly go that far?

Thoughts?

@LittleLynn84:

There is a reason that a number (all too few) of US states, cities and counties have laws or regulations prohibiting "conversion" or "reparative" therapy for minors ... all too many parents are cruel or unthinking enough to try to force their children into the molds they want them to be in, instead of loving and cherishing them as they are.

No offense, but Mr. Strongwell's character hasn't been developed enough to really make a good guess what he might do but he is at least a candidate, in his religious fervor and attitude toward "faggots," to do something awful like that.

I think their parents would do it, they have shown in the gifts they give and the reactions they have had towards anything LGBT that their worldview is that narrow, even if they do not Maria and Rudy are in for a long, dark time in their family.

Sometimes they are taken out of the US to avoid even the less-than-adequate laws here against physical and mental abuse of their own children.

i'm pretty sure most states have laws against conversion therapy camps now. since they were proven to be abusive and for the most part ineffectual..

on that note anyone wanna pick up something hard and blunt and thwomp some jerk parents?

@Dzaka:

Unfortunately no. Only 9 states and the District of Columbia have laws against conversion therapy and a 10th state, New York, has health regulations that restrict it somewhat. Many local governments (cities, towns and counties) ban it but that has limited effect since practitioners of it only have to move a few miles to be outside the reach of such bans.

Also, those laws only ban professional psychiatrists and psychologists from engaging in conversion therapy. Brother Arthur mentioned "camps" for "curing" homosexuality. Religious camps that attempt to bully, shame and convert LGBT kids are not banned (and under religious freedom laws, cannot be banned).

Murder? No. Because then they become martyrs in the fight of religious individuals against LGBT rights. I do think they deserve a solid fucking beating, though, from members of their own religion who understand the New Testament.

As an atheist I really am enraged by the existence of such places. Back to the main topic, Maria and Rudy should look for help in case of their parents trying to do something stupid. Have someone saw that documentary of a camp where the organizers are hired by the parents to kidnap their "not so christian" kids and force them to go to a Latin American country and attend the camp which has the purpose of breaking them emotionally and seek Jesus?

The ultra-conservative, far-right-wing, evangelical, "Christians" know no limits when it comes to their hatred, nor limits to what they will do to "save" someone in their family from such "evils" as homosexuality. So, yes, I do feel that Mr. Strongwell would put Maria and Rudy into one of those places if he can.

Conversion Camp

reply

I'm so terrified of this happening but, at the same time, I almost want it to happen so the team can bust Maria and Rudy out and possibly save some more kids, and maybe Aunt Fara and Vincent could start a safe house for queer kids? I don't know, that's my vision. Still loving this webcomic, Jocelyn! xx

I looked up the lyrics. Here's part of them:
Then we'll take you to the forest
Where none will hear your cry
And we'll cut down the Sycamore and Broom
And it's there we will forgive you
And it's there we'll watch you die
Like a dancing silhouette against the moon

And you will burn, you will burn
We will purify your soul in the fire, in the fire
And your spirit will live forever
It will rise, it will rise
From the ashes and the embers in your eyes, in your eyes
And your spirit will live forever

Praise the Lord
Another soul is saved
Praise the Lord
Praise the Lord

good question

From the little we know about Rudy/Ruby and Maria's parents we could assume that they would probably strongly consider sending there children to a conversion camp.
That being said one of the other adults in the comic may be able to get through to the parents and show them what could happen to their children, if they were to attend one of these camps. There is plenty of evidence out there that the camps do not work and create LOTS of other issues.
I do wonder if they would get a wake up call about their children, if one of the two either got so depressed before, at, or right after coming back that they commit self harm. Would the "protect the children" instinct kick in? Or would it be, "well they deserved it for being "against god""?
It is amazing that R & M are as well adjusted as they are growing up in that environment. You would think that they would have LOTS of self hate for being who they are becoming.
Enjoying the comic as always. Keep up the twists and turns, Jocelyn. Can't wait to see where we are heading.
