To start off, I don't know if I've actually said this yet, but thank you so much for not ditching me even though the comic's gotten a bit heavy recently. As I've said in the past, my heroes/protagonists - in like everything I write - will struggle and suffer sometimes. And that means they have to persevere and overcome hardship and earn their happy endings (just like in real life, it doesn't come easy). And my ultimate goal is - and always has been - that reaching that happy end will hopefully feel like a major victory for the readers too.

Onward to the page. Immediately following the last page, Maria is left directly outside Father Quenton's office to wait for her parents. Normally, she might be a little more feisty and combative through all this, but very suddenly being expelled over basically nothing probably comes as kind of a shock (needless to say).

On the plus side, she gets a visitor and doesn't have to be alone now. But where is this all going...?

Also, Father Quenton's receptionist fellow is not really going to be that important, but you will see a bit more of him in the coming pages, so I decided to give him a little color as opposed to most background characters. I don't think he'll ever be named in the story, but I've been calling him Pete. (Just in case anyone wanted to know.)

Where would Harry Potter be if all its fans abandoned it every time it turned a little dark?

I wonder if J.K. Rowling had readers try to guilt trip her by threatening to stop reading over the dark stuff. I can't be the only that gets that, right? ^^;

If it weren't for that, I'd never have even read the books, actually. I (erroneously) thought they were all fun and games at first.

People really email you over the dark stuff? Honestly you'd think readers of this sort of thing would have far thicker skins. Especially true when you consider the political environment we all live in now.

@LittleLynn84: At least Rowling can throw a full book at her audience. Serial-authors have it way tougher IMO cuz they get comments every single page!

But for a reader, it's really about trust. When an author gives you a situation/story/character that disgusts you or makes you uncomfortable ... do you know and trust that author to do a good job with the material? Are you willing to let them blindfold and lead you? Or do you need your own roadmap (spoilers, reviews from a friend, whatever) to make sure they don't double-cross you and shove your emotions off a cliff?

I think anyone who's gotten through the entire archive knows that even though you bring up tough issues, you also care about the characters so you're not likely to turn this into a tragedy or make Father Q the hero. (We hope!)

Leave you? Sweetheart why should we leave you and the comic just because it have become a bit heavy? Personally I would say that these "heavy scenes" is what makes a lot of the story as a whole, not to say that it bounds us readers closer to the characters.
We love you. <3

I have played Nier Automata, Dark Souls 3, the Fallout series, read Homestuck, teared a bit each time I watch Violet Evergarden and still watch Adventure Time's sadness inducing story lines. I can take this story and survive the pain. Also, can I punch Quenton?

I played Katawa Shoujo, and that has some dark moments in it, still went back and played it again. As much as we would like to see clouds and fluffy bunnies, we also need the darkness to bring out the light, otherwise how would you know to appreciate what you have and what you can still achieve? I feel that the same holds true with Rain, and I like many others will stand by you and watch as their tale unfolds.

I expected the comic to get a little heavy from time to time. It's an LGBT comic. If I didn't expect the comic to have unfair authority and cruel bullies from time to time, clearly i would've read the wrong comic.

If we just left anytime a comic got dark, we wouldn't be satisfied by any happy ending that came to be.

Besides, I imagine Todd and maybe Quenton will screw up in ways where nothing they do will protect them from the inevitable karmic backlash.

As for my best guess for what may happen in the future, I can make 1 prediction.

Todd is going to blackmail a girl into going to the dance with him. He'll eventually find out a secret and use that to force a girl to go to the dance with him. He strikes me as the kind of guy who'd be evil enough do that.

What I HOPE happens at prom because I'm a huge fan of Karma is that Quenton's toupee will fall off his head at prom and everyone there will get to see his bald head. (Like you never once noticed his "hair" and eyebrows are totally different colors.) Bonus points if Todd starts a fight and inadvertently causes the toupee to fall off and HE'S expelled for it. Can you imagine how hilarious that scenario would be? Double Karmic Whammy.

I KNOW it's unrealistic to expect something like that to actually happen in the comic but can we just agree that the idea of Todd getting expelled for starting shit and inadvertently causing Quenton's toupee to fall off would be the most hilarious thing to imagine happening.

The fact that you can bring out these emotions in us is the reason most of us come back I think. I've been reading manga for about 9 years now and have been reading novels for about 12 and it's very rare for manga to get me so emotional but your comic can shift my mood dramatically with a single page. I just finished re-reading it for like the billionth time last night and I had to watch youtube for an hour before my emotions finally calmed down enough to let me sleep, and that is what makes your comic amazing Mrs. Jocelyn. I cry with the characters, I laugh with the characters, and now I'm pissed and in shock like the characters. You've made such a beautiful world that it pains me to wait for each update.

Anyway as for where this is going? Hmm well I frecken hope and pray it's not to a corruption camp, maybe Emily will take Rudy and Maria to her house to stay? Yeah I know she's currently living with Rain to avoid Chase, but come on the girl lives by herself in a house she could probably host all her friends at the house while her bitch of a mom is away. I could also see Chanel taking in Maria, but then what about Rudy? For some reason all I can see from this point is Maria running away because her parents are NOT going to be happy and it has me terrified, but as dark as my mind can go you've said it yourself Jocelyn many times that this is a PG-13 comic and that you won't be showing us anything to terrible, of course that doesn't mean you can't imply things {Like the fact that Kellen may have been physically abused by her dad then abandoned at a conversion camp when she was little, or that Emily may or may not have been raped.} and it scares me about what the future might hold because even the most passive of people are capable of ripping someone's heart out. Sorry for my rambling, I'm sure none of it made sense, I'll go now thank you again Jocelyn for your wonderful comic and I eagerly look forward to the rest of this week's pages.

I spent most of my day re-reading the 2016 transgender discrimination survey report. And I have lived in dark times.

My favorite comics shouldn't have to deal with any of that. What I would like to see now is a gathering of support from all the women that Todd assaulted in the course of this comic to get him arrested and Maria reinstated. And if Quentin wants to resign over that it would also be fine with me.

The only way you'd get me to leave the comic is if it starts going TOO far. And by too far, I mean to lengths that I know this comic would NEVER go to. And I know this comic can and will go to some pretty dark places.
Don't worry about it! Every time there's some major plot twist that isn't happy, people get upset. But that's a good thing! Your intent WAS to upset. Otherwise, it'd be a happy plot twist rather than a sad one. It happened before with Rain's hair, it's going to happen with whatever you have planned in the next few chapters.

What Tragedy is about

reply

I haven't read a story yet that was as dark (in feeling) as what I've lived through, and I've had it easy compared with a lot of people.

Life is full of suffering and hard times. We're all going to get sick, feel pain, lose people, and die. We can't avoid it. The most we can do is to behave "nobly", i.e., decently and admirably, do what we can to aid and comfort one another, and offer some light in the darkness.

What good art can do is give us some sense that there is value in doing that, and if we do that, life won't just be "a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."
