So, let's get right into it: the name. People have been asking about this nonstop since Wednesday. If Colette is a guy, what should we actually be calling him? Well, my answer remains the same as with any other trans person: whatever they say they want to be called. Where it admittedly gets tricky here, is that he hasn't specified. All we really know is that he's ultimately leaning away from ones that sound similar to his given name. So Collin (and other "Co-" names) are probably right out.

I have a name in mind for him, but I want him to be the one to actually say it. So, Colette is fine for right now, because he's hasn't said not to say it. I realize this probably sounds absurd to some people, but I think it's important not to project how others should transition and let them go at their own pace. I knew a girl who kept her distinctly masculine name several years into her transition because it just meant something to her. I knew a guy who didn't want to start HRT because he didn't want to lose his singing voice from the Testosterone. These people are valid! They are trans even regardless of their circumstances. Whether they don't change their names or don't take homones, their experience is valid.

To go kinda roundabout with all this: all I'm saying is that it's okay to call him Colette for now. As long as you're acknowledging he's a man, that's the important thing. For now, let's just try to be patient and let him announce his own name in time. :)

Well if you're going to call him buddy or pal you may as well call him "dude". It definitely fits, it sounds right regardless and in a pinch you can always claim it as a generic-- because these days it is.

Nicholas is the female counterpart to Colette. It's similar, but not as much as Cole or Collin.

Rudy can empathize with having bigoted family members. It feels like this prom is going to be more chaotic than in Mean Girls and Promstuck.

@B37h: Homestuck's fanbase has a problematic reputation. Because of this, nicer and quieter members tend to keep quiet about it. I've noticed a number of references to it in other webcomics, (and one pc game), as well as subtle references in people's comments. If someone notices, great, but if they don't, it's generic enough to slide.

@Jacky: I hear you. While I hate all that soap opera drama that stems from not listening and (honestly) talking to each other, it would cut a lot of interesting stories short.
Trying that in my own book – "my" kids are trying to be honest and trustful with their friends. It leads to very quick evolvement of relationships. More romantic tension would probably make a better story... ;)

Choosing a name is indeed hard. I went back and forth between several (in my mind) before I ultimately settled on Sofia Jane after two of my favorite fictional characters, Princess Sofia of Enchancia from Sofia The First and Jane Lane from Daria.

So this is definitely an outside looking in moment, but Emily once touched on giving kids gender neutral names in the hopes of making potential transition easier, but more often than not they seem to prefer an entirely new name to break away and start fresh. Too much history there and all.

@Guest: It should be easier to choose/change/add a name. I’m all for tribal (American Indian or whatever) traditions where you find/choose your adult name. Let the spirits choose if you meet/believe in them, choose yourself, if you like or need to. The bureaucracy of keeping a track of names should be no bigger hurdle than all that stuff we already have... Such would add a degree of freedom for everyone that would especially benefit transitioning people.

Nice work Rudy, excellent handling of this reveal.

I guess Rudy will next go to Rain for ideas on how to support Colette, being very careful not to accidentally out them.

Come on... "it just doesn't feel right"
Is that really how trans allies (not that I'm not one I just don't know any transppl anymore afaik) feel? Somehow personally dragged into the emotions? Idk it just seems a little generous to give Rudy such extensive empathic powers.
Besides, dudes can wear dresses!
