...!

Based on the comments from the last few pages, I think most of you saw this coming. Those who didn't expect it, still dreaded the possibility. And I want to add that I do hear you when you say this literally can't happen because of the reader ballot. I can't respond to anything directly; all I can say is please keep reading.

As a lighter side note, I've always considered the story to be PG-13. Now, the rules of that rating allow for one "f-bomb". I'm still undecided on whether or not I'll ever use it, but I came real close to having Rain drop it in the last panel. It'd make sense and all given the situation, but somehow, it still just didn't sound right coming out of her. ^^;

I think Rain should confidently walk up to the stage, accept her crown and lay a big wet one on her Queen!

But.. in order for "Ryan" to be elected prom king, wouldn't a lot of people there have voted for that? And even more have seen the name at least? So why the surprised reactions?

Well ... I'm in the "didn't see this coming at all" camp. And, as Kimiko_0 questioned, I do wonder how "Ryan" got enough votes. Hmmm ... wonder where this is leading ...

Ripples In The River

reply

I'm thinking Devon might just say something like "that happened to my friend, too", and shrug it off as a misunderstanding. Maybe Fara will do something as well. But other than that, I guess the school year is over (or almost over), so I guess maybe it'll be okay? Except if they all go to the same college or if the news spread. But I guess I'm mostly worried about how Rain must be feeling right now. Must be a kick in the face to hear herself get outed like that. At prom, nonetheless.

Oh, fuck, this is because she put her name down as "Ryan" on the attendance form, isn't it? I mean, the ballot in-comic doesn't have first names listed, so the staff might've seen "Ryan" listed on the guest list and assumed. Especially since the school also has her listed as "Ryan". But how many people voted for her?

I'm thinking that people legitimately voted Rain into second place for queen and then one of the incompetents in the admin office "corrected" it into the male category based on the out of date paperwork that also required her to use birthname when registering.

Yes "Ryan" was in with the boys names.

Again, it's rare and from an older timer mainly; but it is acceptable as a female name and actually classed as neutral.

You can say the same for things like Addison and Bailey for boys, they work both ways. Don't panic, people.

I suspected this was coming when i saw where Rain was on the list of names as well as the way they used only first initials.

I was almost certain when we had another "ryan" reference a short time ago, and then emily won Prom Queen.

I wished I was wrong. Rain has a potential cover story, which has already been established with someone else previously, but this is gonna get complicated fast, and not everyone is going to buy it.

He Who Abides

I just thought of something. If Rain got enough votes to win Prom Queen (since there's only one character who would have voted her King), that means that each ballot that had a vote for her had another name marked in that same column. Aside from the people counting the votes being idiots ("huh, another ballot with two votes for Prom King? Herp-a-derp!"), this means that Rain beat any guy who would have won, all of whom had votes cast on the same ballots that voted for Emily, Holly, Collette, Maria, Molly, Debbie, and the mystery girl Lynn pulled from another work of hers. What I'm saying is, I'm pretty sure Rain's the actual Prom Queen. I feel bad for Emily in that scenario, but it might help Rain not stress as much about this in the end.
