So, I wanted to try and keep my blurbs relatively short and quiet through the next few pages, but I do think there's been some confusion. A common complaint about the last page that I've seen a lot is: "Why would anyone vote for this Ryan Flaherty if they don't know who he is. This doesn't make any sense!"

I think people are forgetting, though, that we've seen the ballot already. And the ballot only lists the nominees' first initials. So, none of the other students could question who "Ryan Flaherty" is, because they literally never see that name. They see the ballot listing R. Flaherty and know that can only mean "Rain Flaherty". Hence why the peanut gallery in the last page all sound so confused by this name.

The average student also doesn't know that Rain registered for prom intentionally using her still legal deadname. If you recall, she was trying to slip Chanel past the rules barrier established by the school (wherein students can't bring a guest of the same gender), to get her into prom as her guest by purposely having the school assume the wrong gender. In her own words, "I'm just using everyone else's stupid assumptions in my favor for once." Rain figured "Ryan" (the name she's enrolled with the school as) would only be seen by school administration (who don't know her and couldn't make any connections to her), and whoever was working check-in at prom (who likely wouldn't care). She figured that those would be easy enough to get around without causing too much trouble for herself. And for what it's worth, she was right insofar as the plan got her and Chanel into prom rather painlessly.

Anyway, Rain's plan mixed with the school's records, unfortunately come together with the reception hall having only Rain's deadname. This is confirmed here in panel 3, but it's alluded to right when Rain arrives, and goes through check-in with Chanel. The staff member acknowledges "Ryan" as the name they have, and is notably surprised to see two girls come in together knowing the school's rules against exactly that. The attendant checking them in doesn't have any issue with the situation itself though, and lets them in without any resistance.

I can't say much else for the time being, but I've been alluding to the possibility of this scenario for a very long time. As such, I tried to make sure the setup was handled just right. Still, I am very sorry if there's been any confusion, and I hope that this clears up most of it. Regarding most other possible questions, I truly can't say much else yet. But you've followed this comic for 1,100+ pages and up to nine years; so I hope you'll all have a little faith in me.

Thank you for reading, everyone. Please take care.

Ok, Fara got there even faster than I expected. Hopefully this all gets sorted out before too much damage is done, but it can't be difficult for people to work out what might be going on. I just hope it doesn't end badly for Rain.

God I love Fara.
It's like being stuck between pissed off cop and pissed off cop. The poor guy doesn't stand a chance.
Anyway, I reckon in the future Rains friends will go " haha prom, that guy tried to call you Prom King. What a since!"

The rumors are going to spread faster than the correction. I hope Rain's friends can make the situation turn on her favor.

@161616 - pretty sure, yeah. Don't know how many students are there, but I think her beating all the guys means she has enough votes to win Prom Queen over Emily.

Confusion? What confusion?

reply

@LittleLynn84:

While you are free to explain your work, no one authoring fiction is required to "explain" any "confusion" the reader may have, much less apologize for it. It is an act of courage to put your creative soul, as it were, out for people to see. That act of courage is enough ... no explanation or apology is necessary.

So...if Rain's votes were counted under the guy column, doesn't that mean there's a chance that Emily actually lost? Not that either of them would care too much as previously established but....y'know...dramatic whispers can and will ensue.

@ChakatBlackstar - pretty sure, yes. If Rain got enough votes to beat all the guys (who all have votes on the ballots that contained votes the staff counted for Queen), than she most likely has enough votes to win Prom Queen over Emily. It would be easier to figure it out if we knew how many people are attending, but I'd say the term "dozens of votes" indicates that she probably won.
